Description This is a fully functional piggy bank. I know I know, its not creepy or weird. That happens from time to time.

Technical info:
press molded with slabs
raku fired
copper flash glaze

took 30 minutes to go from 60 degrees to 1700 degrees and back down to 60
If you dont know what raku firing is check this link [link] these guys have nice pics that show most of the process

This is a beautiful piece, but I dislike the raku technique for its impermanence as a ceramic treatment. Raku glazes are unstable over time, and sadly, a high-copper glaze such as the one used here will eventually turn green from atmospheric oxidation. Should this happen, the piece can be refired as in the original manner, but unless the body is formulated to have extremely high thermal shock resistance, it will break after repeated firings. Furthermore, raku ware is porous and structurally weak as it is not fully vitrified--it essentially remains bisqueware.

Normally, I wouldn't care about these issues, but the popularity of (American) raku in ceramics is why I feel a need to point out the technical shortcomings of the results. I love your work and the sharp sense of concept in your execution--it is interesting, and perhaps not a coincidence, that you chose to raku a piggy bank, something that traditionally is not meant to have any permanence.

I have had items fade but not with this glaze. I also sprayed it with clear to help it last. I have others that are a year old and they have not changed. I do have some like what you are talking about also, my copper bean lure did it.
The next batch is going to be white crackle and then I dont have to worry

I know what petertwang is talking about, and he's completely right, but I enjoy raku because it creates effects that no other method of firing can produce. I also like the fact that it sometimes fades and changes, because most of the time pottery, once fired, stays the same for thousands of years. Its a breath of fresh air and a nice change. I will soon be putting up some of my recent raku pieces on deviantART, as only the older ones are online now.

Anyway, great job on this pieces, I love it to death! !

I like the oxidized look also so I still like firing this way. I actually like it when it is in between still flashy copper and a little oxidized. Makes it look old and tarnished.
I sold all the things I made with this batch so I don't know how green they have turned.
