The few times I've photographed a hummingbird, mostly because it was there (I did a now lost series of a hummingbird feeding its babies in a nest and the mother actually opens the beak very wide), the good news was they hover keeping their bodies absolutely still. The bad news was they move just about at the point where you have them almost in focus.... so good for you tripping the shutter at the right moment. Also, these shots are really terrific if you can freeze the "tongue" shooting out of the beak. That's only going to happen at a speed over 1000 of a sec.
