Last year we had a great opportunity to join forces with Nerd Corps and Disney on an action packed animated series for the 6yr-11yr crowd: Slugterra. The show revolves around the classic battle between good and evil while slinging live ammo in the form of transforming super slugs. After seeing some fantastic test footage we were hooked — action, monsters, robotic vehicles — what’s not to love?We came on for a few months during pre-production to provide our take on a crazy world they had created. We tackled general style directions, character designs, vehicle designs and countless slugs! As with most productions, several aspects of the show changed before hitting the air. It’s great to see several of our designs survived the gauntlet of production.
For the next few weeks we thought we’d share some of that slug filled journey and provide a peek into our development process. First up, a glimpse at the hero: Eli!

is it true that some aspects of the show are drawn from wild west style genre? and why are the mechabeast not more diverse?
we see the same three to four type; bull, hyena, horse so much, why not throw in a deer, or a raptor to spice things up

6yr-11yr crowd?? I'm 17 and I think this show is great...you would think it'd be the same-old "tame the creature/beat the bad guys" show, but it has very unique qualities in it that I think make it worth watching. Thanks for making the show

I'm usually not too open with the newer cartoons (not that I don't like them, but they never seem to satisfy) as well as newer creature-taming/capturing related shows. But THIS. This show is actually VERY good. It's has an interesting plot, it's unique, great characters designs and the slugs are simple, yet very adorable!! I love the blaster idea, too! These concepts are spectacular. It's awesome to see the artist here!

Since you've seen most of the show, can you please explain to me why the people underground can't go topside???

If the underground people learned about the surface world, it could be disastrous. They might likely loot or plunder it (one scenario, not a certainty). In addition, it would probably come as a devastating shock that the underground was purposely not allowed to know that their world has a surface and a sky. They might feel wronged and blame it on the surface world people, because the people topside do have knowledge of Slugterra. It's like keeping a child ignorant of reality by telling them that their playroom is the only world they need to know.

Oh my god. This explains why I love the look of the gear and mecha in this show so damn much! THIS IS SO AMAZING.
Really hoping that if you post more examples of design work that some Kord Zane development will be among it all. I think he's my favorite character on the show at this point!
