Description
I'm gonna call this finished, even though it isn't.I've had this on the easel for 4 months. I need to let it dry thoroughly and remove it from vision for a while.
It still needs some subtle refinements. Cleaning up the odd edge, and I want to try a couple of things. Darkening or blurring the odd bit, to see if I can improve it further.
It needs to be totally dry for that, as I can then remove the paint without ruining it, if it don't work.
For those of you that have been following this patiently, I hope it was worth it, cheers, I hope you like it.

Of course it's OK, but thanks for asking.
I alway think that my pic's look shit compared to the rest of the featured works, but then again, I bet most artists think that of their own work too.

Hey, it has been a while since I have been on DA, and decided it's about time i should comment on something, so lucky you!
I think this picture is fantastic. It is strong yet shows how finite our lives are. I have been watching a program on tv recently about elephants being rescued from poachers, so i had to see how this painting of yours was coming along.
The colours are very vivid on the elephants, which they do go red/orange when they cover themselves with mud and sand alot to protect from the heat.
The one thing that bothers me is the large elephant on the left. His left eye seems to be a little to high to be comfortable? Could just be the angle of his head though, but it just doesn't seem to be quite right to me.
Anywya that could be something you can look at yourself, and see if you agree
Good to see you still painting, it's more htan I'm doing right now! Still good job! Good to look at something with fresh eyes.

Ooooooooooo, you nearly got me. I've done this for a competition and done all the photo's and all, and then you go and point something out, that I can't ignore. I thought shit! she's right, I can't ignore this one. Then I realised that you're not right. It does look like that, but the dark shadow at the top isn't the eye. There is a slight highlight, a little lower. That is the lower eyelid. If you did mean that bit, we'll agree to disagree. It's hard to see at this size. I wish I could put them on larger, but people could rip them off for prints. Maybe they can at this size too, but you gotta do something.
Nice to see you return. I had a massive painting block for nearly 2 yrs, until only a few months ago. I still painted digitally, just not traditionally. You've just got to do any old thing and it all comes back, even if you end up binning the painting that got you started again. I usually warm up with a Tiger portrait and get half way through and decide it looks too heavy handed, but I am loosened up for greater things, lol.
I wanted to do more detail on that big Elephant, yet I don't want him to draw too much attention. I may come back to this later on, when I can be more objective about it. It was originally going to be a mirror image of this, but at the last minute, I flipped it. I decided to focus on the death rather than him. Not totally sure it was the right move. Should stick with the original idea maybe. Oh well, it's done now.

Ahh well, i guess it is the size, even when i zoom in i can't see that eye *needs new glasses* So if it's only me i'm glad cos it is a very nice painting!
Yeah i feel i'm at a total block at the moment, just lost all motivation. Hopefully i will get back in to drawing at some point in the near future. Havn't picked up a pencil for ages now! Maybe i shall pick one up this weekend and doodle a bit, got nothing else to do anyway! xD
Anyway keep up the good work, good to see it is possible to get back into doing something you love

Bollocks to the size, you're just wrong, hehehehehe.
We're gonna get you back into this, even if I have to ruin your rubbish weekend.
You WILL draw again!
I bet I can excite you, somewhere along the line.

Hehehe, actually have been house hunting this weekend, so not had time to do anything, but I have the urge to do some canvas paintings, maybe for the new house.
I did silk painting a long time ago, maybe some Chinese style paintings would look nice. xD

Sounds good, but if you're moving into a new house, I doubt you'll have any spare time.

I enjoyed the stages.. and i get like that sometimes.. thinking.. ok ill leave it.. and work on it later.. but when i do work on it later, I end up ruining it.
Its a gorgeous picture

I tend to never end up going back to it, for fear of ruining it. Not getting the colours the same or being in a different mood etc.
I have re-visited a couple, yrs later, when I've improved a lot and it is so easy to see what is wrong and what is needed to make it work.
I'm glad you enjoyed the stages. It makes it worth doing.

I don't understand the first comment "Yeah it certanly needs some more work"
what the hell?
I think it looks fantastic. I certainly couldn't paint that well, and if I could, I would discourage critique because it would piss me off. It's not even MINE and it does!

I think it looks great...But I think when you look at with new eyes you'll find the flaws... It's always the case with me staring at the same painting for weeks on end.

crhino In reply to Leebea [2008-01-06 04:11:06 +0000 UTC]
True. It's mainly the tonal balance that I may adjust, once it all settles down. A few highlights here and there. There isn't really any white in it, anywhere, so a few selective highlights, done it daylight, might be needed. It looks a bit flat in daylight, plus I'm pondering whether to darken the bush and a couple of other things.

Thanks. It's much appreciated. I tried to share some of the thought process, rather than a strictly 'how to paint' WIP.
My only regret, is that my dog and myself, twice got ill during it and it did interrupt it a lot. It would have been nice to tackle it in one continuous go, although it still turned out OK.

well done, I've really enjoyed following the progress of this painting. It does look less cluttered without the flying vulture... but then you lose the aspect of 3 vs 3 (assuming the dead elephant isn't counted any more).
