Crimson Valkyrie - Prime UniverseSpectre - Codex Entry
Sara Anderson grew up like most children in Steel City, her mother a college algebra professor at SCU, while her father was a private military contractor specializing in medical supplies for the US Military. She had a younger sister, Lauren, who was a bit more mischievous while they were growing up, but she largely looked up to her big sister Sara, and the two had a very close bond. Sara was a soccer and gymnast star in high school, but she turned down several scholarship offers to follow a different path, one that led her to the military, specifically the Marine Corps. After her initial years in the Marines, Sara was recognized for her outstanding service record and was recruited to join a joint task force with the US Air Force. Taking an interest in investigation and criminal justice, Sara also received special forces training, which turned her body and mind into a powerful weapon. Sara's task force operated in secret around the world, taking the young Marine from the wilds of Russia to the hot sands of Northern Africa, where she put her skills to use eliminating terrorist cells, stopping slavery rings, and eliminating illegal drug trade operations. During her travels she met US Air Force Captain Ashely Coleson, who she would later work with at the SCPD as a fellow detective when she returned to the United States.
While Sara was enjoying her career in the Marines, things back home were unfortunately taking a turn for the worse. Missing her big sister and rebelling against her parents sometimes strict nature, Lauren Anderson began to take on a much riskier lifestyle, experimenting with drugs and alcohol while her college grades began to slip. She eventually took on a job as an exotic dancer after dropping out of college and became addicted to recreational drugs despite the attempts of her parents to intervene. Things took a turn for the worse when Sara's father was killed in a tragic car accident, prompting Sara to take leave from the Marines to return home for the funeral. In a tragic twist of fate, the convoy Sara was travelling with on her way to an airbase was attacked and the transport she was riding in was destroyed by a rocket propelled grenade. Sara survived, but woke up in a military hospital with shrapnel embedded in her spine, clinging to life by a razor's edge. Given her service record, her superiors cleared her for an experimental medical procedure using a mix of cybernetics and nano-technology, which they had illegally procured from several scientists throughout the world, including both Tiffany Anderson and Doctor Layla Asheera. The experimental surgery was successful in restoring Sara's ability to walk, but was ultimately deemed a failure in the military's eyes because it did not enhance any of her other abilities.
Medically discharged from the Marines, Sara returned home to Steel City and attempted to rebuild her family. Her mother, still mourning the loss of her father and distraught over the dark turn that Sara's sister had taken, was on the verge of a complete emotional collapse. After securing employment as a detective with the SCPD, Sara worked on getting her sister Lauren out of trouble, becoming her sponsor as she insisted she go into a rehabilitation program. Lauren was able to successfully kick her drug and alcohol habit with her sister's support, and she even began to attend college classes again while using her income from dancing to pay her way through school. She promised Sara that as soon as she was able to graduate she would quit exotic dancing to get away from the destructive culture she had exposed herself to. Things seemed to return to normal, but once again cruel fate would intervene in Sara's life, as her sister became an unfortunate victim in a shoot out between rival crime lords at the dance club she was employed at. After her sister's death, Sara's mother began to drift away, going so far as to quit her job at SCU as she fell into a deep cycle of depression, which eventually led to her taking her own life after Sara was involved in violent shoot out with a drug gang. She left Sara a note saying she couldn't live with the idea that she would lose her last daughter, and despite her iron clad resolve, Sara now found herself completely alone and emotionally on edge.
In the months that followed her sister's death and her mother's suicide, Sara threw herself into her work, turning her depression into a violent edge that honed itself at the expense of the criminals that operated in Steel City. Written up several times for excessive violence against suspects, most of the higher ups at the SCPD wanted Sara out of the department, but newly appointed police Captain Maurice Foley went to bat for her, citing her service record and dedication to the force. Foley also knew that Sara was one of the few in the department that hadn't become involved in the extensive corruption that was running rampant through the SCPD, and wanted to make sure she stayed on board. After an extensive discussion with her, Foley made her take two weeks of personal leave from the SCPD to clear her head, and upon her return he paired her up with Detective Payton Reed, a relative newcomer to the force. Reed was a bit of a social recluse himself, despite being one of the best detectives in the country, and one of the few SCPD personnel that Steel City's meta-human and super hero population would work. Foley's gamble with the pairing worked out, as Reed and Anderson became one of the SCPD's most effective duos, the two of them quickly spear heading the SCPD's efforts against many of the local drug cartels. Sara appeared to be much calmer and less violent when dealing with suspects under Reed's guidance, but this was more so due to the fact that she had found another outlet for her frustrations.
In the months following her sister's murder, Sara had become increasingly frustrated with the SCPD's lack of success against many of the local drug gangs. Any advancements they were able to make were often undermined by paid off politicians and judges, and while she knew Captain Foley was doing his best to root out corruption in the department, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Using several of her military contacts, she was able to secure some advanced ballistic armor and special goggles that were capable of using both night vision and thermal infrared detection. She spent several months reverse engineering the materials she had acquired, and also used her father's designs for powerful medical injectors to build a special pair of gauntlets that were capable of shooting a variety of darts and other weaponized items. During this time she also discovered that the military's medical experiment hadn't been a total failure, it had just taken awhile for the implants she had received to take root, the detective now finding herself with a pain tolerance that was off the charts, along with slightly augmented strength and boosted senses. Sara combined this, her advanced combat training, and the new costume she had created to turn herself into the vigilante Spectre, and she began to hunt Steel City's criminals at night. Able to use the data she had on hand from being a detective in the SCPD, she was able to target many of the more intensive drug operations that the SCPD had failed to move on, and she quickly took out several of the city's drug cartels.
Many in the city cheered on Spectre's efforts, but she also had her critics as her methods were often extreme and violent. While she didn't outright kill anyone, Sara didn't hesitate to break bones or physically torture her enemies, putting her special forces training to work as she left piles of battered criminals across the city. Eventually her activities forced her to cross paths with the Crimson Valkyrie, and the two women got off to an extremely rough start. When Crimson attempted to approach Spectre to talk with her after they ran into each other investigating the same mob boss, Spectre instead sprayed the powerful heroine in the face with a heavy dose of chemicals and warned her to stay out of her business, escaping into the night as the valkyrie slowly recovered on a rooftop. Crimson later worked with her close friend and fellow heroine Psychadelic to figure out Spectre's identity, Psychadelic deducing that she had been so effective in her battle against crime because she was most likely a police officer in her normal day job. Unfortunately, when Psychadelic attempted to approach Spectre to talk with her, the vigilante incapacitated her and left her with broken ribs and a bruised knee. The Crimson Valkyrie finally put her foot down after this, and revealed to Sara that she knew who she was, and that if she didn't meet with her to discuss her vigilante activities, she would expose her identity as Spectre to both the SCPD and the city itself. Feeling backed into a corner, Sara reluctantly met with Crimson in a remote part of town and the two women hashed out their differences, leading to Sara suffering an emotional breakdown as she realized her Spectre persona had been born from all of the loss she had experienced in life.
She was surprisingly consoled by the Crimson Valkyrie, who showed her a surprising amount of trust and took her under her wing, even going so far to reveal her own tortured past as she told Sara her own secret identity, that of Steel City's brilliant scientist Tiffany Anderson. While their shared last name was a coincidence, Sara took it as a sign and began to team up with Crimson to take on Steel City's criminals, the combination of Tiffany's nurturing and her friendship with detective Reed slowly helping her reach a balance in her life. While she ultimately became less violent, she was still a very effective crime fighter, and as tales of her reformation began to spread through the city, many of Steel City's other heroes began to trust her and ask for her assistance. Eventually she was able to patch up her confrontational relationship with Psychadelic, the two of them becoming close friends to the point that Psychadelic specifically approached Sara to help her rescue her kidnapped girlfriend, Kirsten Marten. As she was growing into more of a heroine, Sara began to watch out for Detective Reed as Spectre, the two of the striking up a bit of a rooftop romance as a result of Spectre consistently aiding Reed when he happened to get himself in trouble with the local criminals after hours. In reality, Sara had been attracted to Reed for several months at work, but had been too shy to approach him about it, especially given how he tended to react when he received attention from the opposite sex, not to mention she hadn't wanted to do anything to jeopardize their effective work partnership.
As Spectre, it was much easier for her to interact with Reed in the way she wanted to, and their relationship quickly intensified into a deep romantic bond. Unsure of how she would break the news to Reed that she was also his detective partner, Sara debated unmasking herself to Reed, but once again fate would intervene to make the decision for her. Assisting Reed on a late night investigation, the pair were lured into a trap that had been left to ensure Reed's death in a violent explosion at an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Steel City. Before the bomb could detonate, Spectre pushed the detective out of a window, saving his life as she took the brunt of the explosive force. Fearing the worst, Reed dug through the wreckage of the building and found Spectre, barely alive and badly injured, her suit and her advanced physiology having saved her from the bomb blast. Fearing she might die in his arms, Sara removed her mask and revealed her identity, though she was surprised when Reed humorously revealed he had pretty much figured it out already and had just been giving her time to make the decision to reveal herself. After a romantic kiss, she passed out in his arms from her injuries and spent the next few days recovering at his home as he nursed her back to health. When word of her sacrifice to save the detective spread through the hero community, Spectre found herself fully embraced as one of Steel City's heroines and she was recruited by many of them to assist with their missions. Tiffany, who Sara had come to call a sister, told her how proud she was and as a further show of trust upgraded much of Sara's crime fighting gear, making her an even more effective threat as Spectre.
With her life seemingly as normal as it could possibly be, Sara settled down with Detective Reed, the two of them enjoying a growing romance as they continued to be one of the SCPD's most effective detective duos. However, Sara was about to get a call back from her past when she encountered the ghostly heroine Moonshadow one night while on patrol as Spectre. The two wound up as unlikely teammates when Moonshadow came to Spectre's aid during a fight at a drug house. When one of the cartel members accidentally shot an explosive storage tank with his weapon, the ethereal heroine grabbed Spectre and used her special ability to phase them both out of the physical plane of existence, leaving them both unharmed from the resulting explosion that completely wiped out the facility. Astonished at Moonshadow's ability, before Spectre could ask her about it she noticed the necklace her fellow heroine was wearing, especially the cross pendant hanging from it. It was a necklace Sara had given her sister Lauren for her birthday, the year before she had been killed in the shootout. Aghast, Spectre questioned Moonshadow about where she had gotten the necklace and pressed her for answers regarding the nature of her abilities. When Sara revealed that her sister had been shot three times in the lower abdomen, Moonshadow became shocked, realizing she had bullet scars on her spectral body in the same area. Overwhelmed with emotions, the ghostly heroine fled the scene.
Later, after encouragement from her girlfriend Quasar, Moonshadow sought Spectre out, revealing that she had lost most of her memories and couldn't recall much of her earlier life, though now that she had figured out she was the result of an experiment by the Helix Corporation, she knew that she was somehow related to Sara. With the help of Serenity, the two sisters were reunited and most of Lauren's memories were restored. Though she would never be able to regain her full physical human body again, Lauren and Sara did their best to rekindle their sisterhood, and began to work together as Moonshadow and Spectre, becoming a feared duo of the night as they attacked Steel City's criminal scum from the shadows. Now, reunited with her sister, while also enjoying her blossoming relationship with Detective Reed, along with the strong bonds of friendship she had found among her fellow crime fighters, Spectre has dedicated herself to keeping the innocent people of Steel City safe, becoming one of Crimson Valkyrie's most powerful allies as she keeps watch from the darkened rooftops.

They work out in the end, but she had a pretty tough go of it. Her heart was in the right place when she became a vigilante, but she took out a lot of her pain on the bad guys, maybe a bit excessively in some cases, hehe

Great codex entry CV. I must admit, I didn't realize Moonshadow and Spectre were sisters, that's a nice touch to both their backstories.

It wasn't something planned originally, but Moon Shadow is based heavily on Dark Horse's Ghost comic and in that story she spends a good bit of it trying to figure out where she came from and discovers she has a sister that's still alive and their relationship is part of the story going forward. I wanted to try something similar and since I already had it that Sara lost her entire family through various means, thought it would be cool to have her find out her sister was still alive.

A really tragic backstory that fuels her quest for justice. I like this rougher/harder stance, it makes her stand out a bit in the world of vigilantes. The look is really cool, PG did a great job (love those gauntlets ).
Harrier: I wouldn't mind talking shop about tech and equipment with her (and Inquisitor)

Yeah she was one of my darker characters when I designed her, but I also had the redemption story in mind along with her sister returning from the dead after I read the Ghost comics.
I need to do a team up of some point of all the super detectives, perhaps Jules needs to travel to the US for a case, or Sara, Andrea, and possibly Ashley have to go to the UK...

Her story went through a few revamps, and then got tied in with Moon Shadow's as well. With all the stuff she went through with her family, I thought it was only fair her sister got to come back. Plus the Ghost comic(which Moon Shadow is mostly based on) featured a story line where the main character and her sister eventually reunited.

I remember you telling me about the Ghost comic inspirations and im happy you got to tie everything together with these two characters I forget though, were Spectre and Moon Shadow always meant to be siblings? Forgive me its been a bit. Either way, im glad Sara got a happy ending with her sister, her boyfriend and with Tiffany as a confidant

Not at first, but after reading the comic it seemed like a fun twist since Ghost and her sister were eventually reunited and continued with a normal relationship.

Nice to see Sara get a chance in the spotlight. Like the additions to her background. Any plans for getting Jennifer PG'd, or a Birds of Prey-like render with Crimson, Spectre, and Psychadelic (if that's the name Jennifer is going by now instead of Pink Falcon)?

Yeah as part of the reboot Jennifer got a redo to where she has mental and telekinetic powers now and at some point she'll have to get a PG version and her own codex. I'd see Inquisitor fitting in more with those 2 as a BoP type team..

Sara didn't come around til after Tiffany was CV, so timeline wise it happens a bit later. Same thing with Jennifer. Her earliest allies that she works extensively with are Lightning Lass, Jaguara, Mindy Marvel, Shadow Samurai, and to an extent, Silhouette, since they meet when Tiffany is still CD.

I haven't had much chance to get to her adventures in the middle of the reboot, but mentioned her in a comment and it reminded me that I needed to get her PG version made and work up her background for Crimson-Verse.
