Description This is a simple tutorial on how to make an aviator cap.

1. sew the short ends of the headband together to make a ring.

2. sew the 4 triangles together so you get a half sphere and sew this to the headband

3. position the ear flaps appropriately and sew to the bottom of the headband.

I only lined my ear flaps to give them extra weight, but if you choose to line the entire hat, you will basically need to make two of these one of the outer fabric and one of the lining fabric and sew them together.

Here's my finished product:
Sorry about the skull, I had a dopey face and this was an improvement...

Here it is with my closet steampunk outfit

Here's 's version. Canvas was used instead of pleather and it looks great!: [link]

This is 's version. FF12 Moogle!! She made holes in the top of the cap to fit the ears through.

If I tried to make an hat, it would turn out as a some sort of.... undefinable piece of... something.

When the skull popped out I was just "HOLY JESUS CHRIST" even though I read the description and knew DA was right with the monsters...

I'm starting my very first steampunk outfit, based around a single vest. I want to make this hat so much, but I realized about 2 minutes ago that I look terrible in aviator caps and anything to do with earflaps! However, I may still make it. You did a great job with this tutorial, it is simple and applicable to everyone who wants to do it. If I make it, I'll show you

I wanted to let you know that I used your tutorial to make a cap and it turned out great! There's pics here:
[link]

I used green canvas to make it since I didn't have any leather kicking around. I do plan to make a leather version at some point though. It was pretty straightforward and easy, I'd say it took me less than an hour start-to-finish, and that's even with the decorative topstitching included. (I still need to buy a buckle for the straps, though.)

Thanks so much for making the tutorial!

I <3 you.

Srsrly, this provided two afternoons of pricked fingers.. er.. fun. And an awesome hat at the end! It was fun to come up with new flap ideas, and 1/3 a yard each was plenty. (split a full yard with Plunkqwette)

oh i have a question also?

how much fabric/material is necessary? not that much, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cristophine In reply to Plunkqwette [2008-12-04 04:23:31 +0000 UTC]

Nope. 1/2 a metre should do it. Double that if you want to line it, just make sure you get 1/2 of outer fabric and 1/2 of inner fabric.

Saw your hat over on threadbangers.com, thought it was really awesome. I plan on making one as soon as I find some brown leather pants. Tis yard saling season, so I'll probably dig up some soon. I'll probably line mine for winter though.
