I think it's because we only say Er/Sie/es (He/ She /it ) You can't use a neutral personal pronoun.

Well since Chrona is is mostly depented on Madusa I think he looks down not to anger her and others around him. If you make eye contact with someone in a higer power then you, you are basicly say "I'm not scared of you and I dare you to do something about!"

the "4th wall" is a refference to theater. When a character in a show or form of media acknowledges that he/she is in a cartoon, play, movie etc. That is called "breaking the 4th wall". hope that was helpful.
