Description Hey guys! Yeah so crunching RIGHT TO the deadline, I'm finally submitting my piece to for "Mario's Blacklist." I was really happy to secure a spot for one of my favorite bosses. This is Fracktail from Super Paper Mario. If you haven't played SPM, go out and buy it right now. Nintendo decided to specially design a game just for me! But seriously, thsi game is chock full of tongue in cheek humor, great storyline, loads of awesome levels, and this bad boy.

I hope I did him some justice. The fight with Fracktail is just so awesome. This guy is HUGE and terrifying. At first, I designed the piece to have the desert below, but it felt too grounded to me. After consulting some fellow artists, I decided to just make them totally airborne. The idea was to emphasize Mario's helplessness. As always, critique and comment is encouraged. I'm always looking to improve my technique.

This is pretty different from my usual grungy palette, so I hope you enjoy it! I like having a bright, sunny piece in my gallery. Make sure to download the wallpaper size if you're feelin' froggy!

And you can just see Mario hanging on for DEAR life on his tail. If he's not careful, he's doomed.

No problem, and thanks! I thought it was really great too, though I've heard the Thousand Year Door is the best of the trilogy.

Ugh, my goodness, I just adore your artwork! The dynamic perspective and the amount of detailing here is just astounding! I know I would never have the patience to do that much intricate work on Fracktail, but it turned out flawless!

Thanks!! Man Fracktail was the coolest. I remember nerding all over the place during that fight. So much Nintendo/Geek fan service.

This looks incredible! Β It's vibrant, interesting, and definitely brings back the feel of this boss fight. Β Gotta say though, you definitely interpreted it to be a lot more vicious than it seemed, but it definitely works!

Haha, thanks a lot! I like to take things in a different direction from the obvious when I do fanart most of the time. But this piece in particular needed to be fairly vicious since the event I submitted it to was about Mario baddies. It wasn't a requirement, but it was encouraged. Still, I had a lot of fun making Fracktail scary. He WAS hella crayzay in that fight. I'm glad you like it, thanks for the kind words!

You have not, congratulations! No wonder you're so busy. That's fantastic news! Is she a gamer too? Or he, you never know anymore. In the new world, I need to stop assuming stuff. Yeah, the home projects must be crazy about now. Did you guys buy a house together, or did you already have one? I bought a house this year, and I swear I'd rather be dealing with all the stress of a wedding. I can't believe anyone gets married AND buys a house the same year. I'd lose my mind.

I'm happy for you, way to go!

burkeonthesly In reply to Cronoan [2015-01-29 03:45:20 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! We celebrated our first anniversary recently (I am so bad at getting back to dA). She and I are very happy together (and moreso, now that my job is winding down from the crazy pitch of the holiday season). We've been living together in a condo for a few years now--it has many of the advantages of a house, but we don't have to do the lawn care ourselves (which, for the handicapped and those allergic to sunlight, is an important feature).

I can sympathize, a little bit, about house-hunting. Every time it's cropped up in my life, it's been an ordeal. I hope it's going better for you, and I wish I'd come back sooner to urge you to get a house inspector. They're like a couple hundred bucks, but they'll tell you about the thing that's going to cost you thousands to fix that the current owner either didn't know or "forgot to mention."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cronoan In reply to burkeonthesly [2015-01-29 13:26:01 +0000 UTC]

Haha, don't worry! I ordered an inspection which found issues in the roof that we made the owners repair before we bought it. The inspection did NOT find that the shower leaks into the downstairs and is ruining the basement ceiling. But I got some first year insurance I'm going to call in for that. The owners paid for it at my request. So the house is great! I don't have much money, but I'm happy.

I'm really glad your life is going so well! You were the first person here who liked my Metroid work when I started learning how to paint and finding my niche.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

burkeonthesly In reply to Cronoan [2015-01-29 19:55:41 +0000 UTC]

Oof, roof issues and leaky shower, I can sympathize on both points (and where home improvement is concerned, my condo is cursed! I have got stories, I say). Glad to hear they're taken care of, though. I've long felt that if you have enough money that its lack isn't an impediment to happiness, then it's much better to get more happiness than more money.

It was my pleasure. You brought a refreshing originality with you that I still enjoy, and coupled it with an awareness of game-lore that could only come from genuine love of the subject. Your early Metroid works were a pleasure, and your more recent works remain so.

Oh, wow! Love all the details in the scales and textures especially Fracktail's head! Seeing this for the second time and I still really love the composition of Fracktail and itty bitty Mario hanging onto the tail in the center of it all. Great job!!

Yes!! Paper Mario is one of my all time favorite games, and SPM really did the series justice. Thank you for your kind comments, I'm glad you like it. I was worried such a plain background might detract from the energy I wanted this piece to have. It's great to know that it's still dynamic enough to be interesting.

LPhela [2014-07-29 13:47:54 +0000 UTC]

It is a great picture from a great game!

Not much to add, other then perhaps the behind part tail on the far left is too bright as it should be more darker.
Since that part is in the shadow.
I also noticed in photo's made in very hot places like deserts the contrast between light and dark is more extreme.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Cronoan In reply to LPhela [2014-07-29 13:53:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! That's a good point. I tried to make the shadows harsher than I normally would. Or maybe sharper? The tail bothers me too, maybe I should fix it.

I definitely struggled with the lighting. At first I had too many shadows everywhere and someone was like "You know the sun is shining right? O_o" I think I have the contrast too high on my monitor, cause the shading is pretty dark to me. Then I look at it on other screens and it's not that dark.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LPhela In reply to Cronoan [2014-07-29 14:43:56 +0000 UTC]

You are welcome!
You can also add more black in the darker colours or make the brighter colour more brighter for instance.

In shading try to be consistent as possible and think how one direction from the lightsource creates shadows and light spots.
If you follow this to a tee then normally any shading problems should solve itself.
I use my hands and a lamp to figure out how light cast shadow and also for other stuff.

Usually I take the average of various depictions and aim in the middle.
My pc tends to make colours look more brighter then they really are, so I am familair with that issue.
Take in consideration where your window is (in front of your computer, the side or back) as that affects how you perceive brightness and contrast as well.

Cronoan In reply to LPhela [2014-07-29 14:49:44 +0000 UTC]

Lol, you should see my game/pc room. Windows aren't a problem really, since we keep them covered. We painted the entire basement's walls midnight blue to make it dark down here. I'll have to take some pics and post them sometime once we really get some posters and furniture and stuff.

I'll take another look at it and see if I want to go ahead and take the time to darken the shadows more.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LPhela In reply to Cronoan [2014-07-29 15:11:31 +0000 UTC]

Haha, perhaps.

That can work well too.
Although it is nice to look through windows.

Great, then it will be an even more awesomer room to be in.

Updating an artwork is always up to the artist.
As it is right now, it looks good.
