We booked our trip too late for the Internet lottery, so we went there, very anxious and finally were very lucky to get a walk-in permit. Only 17 people in the draw that day!

Oh.... I know these kinds of rocks. I have never been at this exact location, but I've been in northern Arizona and a few National Parks there. Thanks for posting this. It reminded me of my beautiful hikes there.

I was indeed. Seems like we didn't explore the area thoroughly though... this means we'll have to go back one day. Will we be lucky to get a permit again?!?

You know they have an on-line lottery for about 10 permits every day as well as those at the field station. I think the odds get better as well if you go in the heat of July and August.

That's true, my sister and my dad went there in July 2007 and they just went to the station in the afternoon and got their permit for the next day... we were pretty lucky though, only 17 people in the draw when we went!
