Description
The photo was taken in 2005, and my brother was 13 at the time. Ever since I took it, I've wanted to do something more with it. Finally I got around to it, and today, finished this piece.Time: I don't know how long this one took. Over several days, in about, I would guess, 6-9 hours?
Media: Graphite pencils.

haha don't worry, I mean the shading, the details...and everything that makes the skin and the face looks realistic

Ohh got it...
SInce i don't have a defined style when the time of sketching someone comes. I just try to make a good "texture" as you said... hoping it looks as much as real as possible... Anyway... I hope you've seen my artwork,,,
au revoir!

Awesome portrait!
Really like your technique with the shading, and the hair looks so realistic!
Only thing I see, is that it could very well be a little darker in the shadows. My personal oppinion, since I like contrast. I think it creates a nice 3D effect.

Yes, in the photo the shadows were darker, but I wasn't brave enough to keep pushing them in this drawing.
Thanks for the comment.

I've never seen this one, it's good. Reminds me how much better I like John's short hair I have no artsy comment or critique (imagine that) so fabulous likeness, L

I only just finished it, like, yesterday. Yeah, I kind of miss his short hair too; when it was just the right length it looked really good. Thanks.

One of the first things I notice is that this differs a great deal from your self portrait in the handling of values. The values in this one are "compressed" compared to the other. That means there is much less range from light to dark. The darkest darks here are not as dark as the darkest darks in the self portrait. I wouldn't call this one difficult to read but it is not as easy to read as the other because of the values all being more toward the light end of the scale.
It's hard to know how much of that is intrinsic to the drawing and how much of it is a reproduction issue. What can you tell me about that?
The second thing I notice is that the pencil marks, the hatching, is more in evidence in this one. I love seeing that because it reinforces the fascination of such a realistic image being physiologically constructed, "by hand". Your ability to model sophisticated, subtle forms with that hatching is pretty remarkable. (That's something that is very compelling about the Renaissance master's drawings (actually most pre-20th century drawing): the wonderful forms are clearly constructed of "handmade" lines.) In this drawing I especially like the modeling on the neck, though it's good everywhere.
As with the self portrait, you have a terrific model here: the face is wonderful, a really handsome kid, and the expression just complex enough to lure us to keep looking to meet his gaze and wonder what's going through his mind. (You're really lucky to have such compelling models just lying around handy.)
The ultimate success or failure of an artwork lies in the effect the image has, as an image, and that is completely dependent on the taste and sensibility of the artist who selects and presents it. In that regard I think you are endowed with a superior aesthetic sense: this image has some appeal at some level for just about anyone.

I also considered it a little bit different in comparison with your self portrait. It looks more artistic and soft... and that's just what I like!
I surely would like to have your knowledge about proportions because I have no tech knowledge when it is about designing people. I don't know how, but I just try to make as real as possible.... All I can trust is in my eye,,, and patience... if I am able to find it... he he...

OMG his hair is short!!! XD lol!
I John!
You should tell him that when he's done growing his hair out, he should cut it 'cause he's such a cutie :3 -pinches his little cheek- XD
J you are beyond awesome! You have the skills (& the patience) of a goddess :3

Yes. It hasn't been short in so long now. The last time it was cut short was pretty much before he came with us to America D: it was getting pretty shaggy then, too, though. XD
AND YOU CAN TOO. :3
