Oho...what's this? It appears to be a page!Oh look, gutters. I think I liked my other, non-guttery page-layout slightly better if only because I get to use the entire page when I draw it, but this also works. Reminds me of my Wind Riders days anyway XD
The Ned speech in the beginning her used to be longer but I had to chop some bits out. There was a bit more explication and observation regarding the New Tribe and some of the people he bumped into, but this is more to the point, though you get less Ned smart talk XD

When you start flailing over your next page spend a little extra time flailing over your backgrounds, I don't want you dropped from the tourney over something as preventable as a plain background.
Other than that, I look forward to the next page.

Well, there's not much backgrounds to put in so far (and with the panels not much space for them on this page), and I'm opting for simplification even so. It's a definite improvement from my last round, which was made primarily out of talking heads in the latter half, which is what the judges had critiqued me on--zooming out of the character close ups and giving the backgrounds (even if they're simplified) room to breathe. Though I'm not sure whether you're criticizing the lack of backgrounds or the simplification of them.

I do believe my comment was about the simplification process of said backgrounds... Though giving breathing room sounds rather appealing, and I can understand the judges' standpoint about that. A simple background is better than no background and whatnot.
I'm not trying to come off as offensive, I just didn't want you skimping out on them, and paying them no mind. But you seem to be on top of it =O

Ah, and I wasn't offended per se, just sort of "...why the hell would she say that?" Considering that the judge's focus is usually story and characters, so those of course would go first. The fact that the background is simplified is something that the judges actually addressed in their critique of me and when asking a judge, simple backgrounds are definitely not a problem, nor are they usually a problem in terms of storytelling. Like you said, no backgrounds at ALL are the problems or OVERLY simplified backgrounds. I'd like to think I at least gave the thought that he's somewhere someplace and there's perspective.
Also, the fact that the person I'm up against in their round 1 comic didn't have very complicated backgrounds themselves, and neither did a few other contestants. The suggestion that I could lose a tournament on the basis that my backgrounds weren't detailed enough was kind of "what the fuck?" to me.

Well, I don't think it takes much information to figure it out...work-load wise I tend to do more than the other contestants anyways because I write too much, so details that are quite literally "in the background" are obviously not going to be a focus

I did notice you tend to er, create more than most. Curse, gift, what have you, it's a lot to take on even without having to make sparkling backgrounds. I completely agree with that.
But as I am not privy to judge's minds I don't know their standards, and didn't know how strict or lax their expectations of anyone happen to be. Who knew, maybe they expected you to make said sparkling backgrounds, where you can make out every little crack in the wall that dear Ned is leaning against. Had that been the case... well good luck with that. As it is, it is not. So no worries.
