Description Sometimes they'd spend hours locked away in an office, looking over evidence and case files, working out leads and theories. Dinner came and went in little chinese take out boxes, growing in slow piles on Damon's desk after the wastebasket filled. A thirst for justice kept them going.

And coffee.

Lots and lots of coffee.

--

Because they were the Legendary Duo once upon a time. Because I like thinking that they had to earn that title being partners, and being partners had to earn each others trust and work as a team. Because I think that Damon was once noble and was well-respected for a reason other than fear, back when he was a detective. Because I like thinking that the reason Damon's betrayals later on had weight was because of their partnership and friendship and trust.

because I fucking love these two. Because Damon gant couldn't get out of my head. Because I want to look at Gant as something other than Mr. "mindfuck rapist" (and because I believe he is and was more than just that).

Because I wanted to kill myself attempting to do more scenery with perspective >:I Because I need a MOTHERFUCKING BREAK AUUUUUUUUUUUUGH

I was replaying Rise from the Ashes to celebrate it finishing today, and I saw this picture. It's a great picture and I like your interpretation of Gant. Great job!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who views Gant the way you do! I always thought he and Lana had something going on, long ago, and that he was truly a good man before he became greedy and offed Neil Marshall.

Gant is a very interesting character. So focused on punishing crime he forgot the reason crime is punished in the first place.

I remember faving an old artwork you did of these two, so it's great to see you draw them again - and this time with amazing perspective and added scenery. Brilliant job!!

Very good, nice work with the perspective. I love how you draw Gant's hair from this angle. However, I suggest you be careful with the lines, they look quite messy in some parts.

I appreciate your view towards him. Not much people out there remember canon Gant.

oh it is very messy. It's basically a glorified doodle. Glorified with color and things. You can even see some perspective guidelines!

And yeah, that always bothers me. :\ Not everything is rape, you know? BUT I DUNNO, MAYBE I'M JUST CRAZY FOR THINKING THAT

Oh, I see it now. Glory indeed. XD

If that makes you crazy, then I am crazy too. XD Gant in my mind is only a jolly old man who loves swimming.

He is, admittedly, also a manipulative, opportunistic bastard who in the end cares more about himself than anyone else, but that hardly means he'd actually rape people. I still think he can have that "evil" side to him while STILL SINCERELY BEING a jolly old man who loves swimming.

LOL I love your description XD

Yeah, I can agree that he definitely had to get somewhere with the partnership but I don't know something just tells me he planned things... either that or he unintentionally made a perfect partner and in the end just decided "Hey, perfect bait to use"

God...

That man is hard to read sometimes I fuckin swear.

Lets just imagine these scenes together for both our sanity XD

I don't think he planned things. I think he took the opportunity when it came up to him. That's what Gant's good at doing--playing with what he comes across. Otherwise he'd be pulling strings WAAAAY from the fucking start, and as conniving as I think he is, I don't know if he'd be doing that.

Hmmm

You have a point. Feels like idea's always were better off from random jumps then planning it from the start.

I should know... I write a lot :/

You bring up a good point my friend.

By the by, know anybody who can make group avatars...? It bothers me our Gant Group literally looks plain by the avatar.

"Dinner came and went in little chinese take out boxes..." Okay, number one, this is a great sentence.
Number two, how in the name of all that is good did you manage to make Gant's hair look normal from the top.
Three: DEM HANDS. UNF.
Four, teehee Blue Badger mug.

This is awesome. I love the perspective, the detail of the map, and the unusual view of Gant. Geez, I liked him even after we went wacko because he's just that awesome. But you're right in the former relationship part; he's not just a flat character, and you did a great job of showing that.

I like how you tried this extreme angle. It's really a challenging thing and you're definitely not the first artist to struggle with it. :> I think you handled Lana's foreshortening really well, though I do feel that Gant looks a little off. Or maybe that's just me, because he is quite a bit bigger than Lana, I suppose. Did you plot the office with a vanishing point to get it all right?

I also love the colour harmony in this, it gives an overall warm feeling. If I might offer a suggestion, I would add a tiny bit of cool colour to the shadows of the piece, as the law of Simultaneous Contrast says whenever there is a warm lightsource, its complimentary will be contained in the shadows, and vice versa. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just a friendly suggestion, because I really like how you've done this whole thing and it seems like you put a lot of effort into it.

Furthermore, I appreciate the effort you put into the small details all over the image. :> Well done.

crumblygumbly In reply to Orycia [2011-04-28 06:53:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh believe me, there were several vanishing points in this picture, and I plotted them all out before going at the background. Thanks!

And Gant is a bit off (I noticed this, yes XD ), but I think a big part of that is the fact that he's at a strange angle to the table that makes it look a little worse than it might've been (meaning he has a different personal vanishing point than how the desk is set up, unlike lana, who was easier to do because she follows along the lines of the desk a bit more closely), and added to the fact that he is a lot bigger in comparison to Lana, which is sort of amplified by it. I think if I was able to show the characters' feet, their position in the room would've been anchored better, but with the overall composition, it just didn't happen that way. O: that's the problem for me with all this perspectivey stuff, because I can do the backgrounds easily enough, but it's a bit more math and visualization at times when it comes to people.

And thank you for the suggestion! I was attempting to make it very warm, which is the reason behind the color choices, but you're right. Maybe on another piece I'll play around with that more. *nods* XD Color is one of my weeeeak weak weak points, so I'm always trying to figure it out.

Orycia In reply to crumblygumbly [2011-04-28 10:26:48 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, I also struggle more with perspective in people than in backgrounds. Funny, because most people are the other way around. XD I see what you mean, it is one of the most complicated areas of art but I think you did well anyway. :3

You're welcome. XD I only learned about it recently, myself. It's surprising to know how little I actually knew about colour.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

crumblygumbly In reply to Orycia [2011-04-28 10:40:29 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's not that they do it "better" when it comes to human foreshortening/perspective, I think, it's just that in art it's a lot easier to fake or to make assumptions on, and with the foreshortening of a figure, it's a lot more acceptable to exaggerate. If I drew Gant and Lana alone without a background, it'd probably be a lot more easier to do. I think the problem is that with the introduction of an environment, the perspective becomes systematic, and the guesswork or exaggeration or what have you of figure-foreshortening suddenly has to fit within a network of rules. They have to work within the background. It all really depends on when you use the perspective and how.

And thanks!

Orycia In reply to crumblygumbly [2011-04-28 14:52:30 +0000 UTC]

That's true, as well. As artists, it's our job to create that illusion. There's a lot of exaggeration in most artwork, which is actually part of drawing realistically anyway.

Most people, when drawing fanart, don't seem to really bother adding background (literally and figuratively) to the characters. I find this to be extremely interesting, both because I'm totally incapable of drawing scenes, backgrounds, perspective and the likes, and because it's a well-thought backstory-fanart. In short, I love it and this drawing shall go into my favourites ^_^

Nice job. Looks like perspective was a killer but you did it well. I am fascinated by their relationship...Gant is such an interesting character and the hints about their charged relationship are quite intriguing! It can't be as simple as 'he was an f'd up megalomaniac' and she had a thing for mentally disturbed guys!

That's one thing that sort of bothered me with most people's interpretations of Gant and their relationship before hand O: I don't think he was always an openly mean and manipulative person. I think everyone had to be drawn into him somehow.

So either he was a great person before (I think what had happened was that he used to be noble but became a vigilante and selfish and obsessed with getting people convicted--like von karma, his best friend in the entire world obvsly XDD), or he was brilliant at acting one. I mean, the judge even asked basically, what had happened to the noble man that he had known. And they were good friends, right?

OH WHO KNOWS IT'S JUST FUN TO DRAW.

miraimerlin In reply to crumblygumbly [2011-04-29 20:21:29 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. Its not a betrayal unless there's something there to be betrayed in the first place. And besides, Lana doesn't exactly seem like the type to get attached to people lightly. Of course the view we get of her in the game is skewed by the depths she has fallen to but I get the idea that even before then she would have been a bit of a tough cookie. (Maybe I will write an angstfic and name it 'That's the way the cookie crumbles' XD)

Hey I was just looking through your gallery and seeing that you are responsible for a number of the pics I love. Besides your Lana/Gant pictures you are also the one behind sexy young Gant and the most sensible piece of crack of all time, Gant/Ganondorf!
So, kudos to you. I am a fan. Hope to see more from you later~

That's how I figure. I mean, I think her losing her parents at a tender age and having to be the "grown up" of the family for her younger sister, as well as keep it tough in law school and eventually the precinct would in some way affect how she views and takes on relationships with other people. XD I really do think that she ended up being close to Gant in one way or another, be it a close friendship, a romance, or viewing him as a the father figure she lost (and to be honest, I'm probably going to end up drawing a lot of that soon, because it's one of the few ways I relieve stress and the images keep playing in my head). I dunno, makes sense in my head. XD But anyway, any of THOSE situations gives the inevitable "I only look out for myself" betrayal from Gant the weight it had, I think.

XDD anyway, thank you. It's been a while since I played with Gant, but he's one of my favorites, and I think I'll be playing around with him more, soon. U_U We'll seeeeeee
