Description
So I finally finished something for this story. And it only took half a year! Not even joking about that. This origin story idea has been in my mind (originally intended to be a fan fiction) pretty much unchanged since way back in May, so a few details are possibly slightly outdated. If you care at all about why it took me so long, or my extra thoughts on this thing look at this journal entry , because I don't want this description to become as long as the picture itself. I hope this comic is clear enough for people to understand my story from the picture alone, but there are also a lot of details I would have included in the written version that couldn't really make it into the comic form, even as large as this is.
I actually finished an earlier version of this more than a week ago. In that one, I used dialogue instead of narration, but I felt like it just wasn't working. The story was too condensed, so the dialogue felt forced. So now I have this slightly odd alternative, and I realize it looks a little awkward in a few places how the ponies are all just standing there. So keep in mind that they are conversing, just that anything they would have said in such a small space would have been pretty redundant to the narration, so I felt it was better to leave it out entirely and let their interactions be somewhat vague. At least that way I didn't have to worry about using Ye Olde Ponyish due to the Nightmare Night episode.
I don't think I could ever be completely satisfied with this, and there are still things that bother me about it, but it's a lot better than the other version, in my opinion. Bleh, though, this thing has been molding in my head for so long, I can't even tell anymore if the ideas I wanted to express came through at all. I really hope this thing makes sense and everything...I keep bouncing back and forth trying to decide if I mostly like how this turned out or not.
Last thing I want to mention here is about Luna and Celestia's friends. That was the one aspect of this project that most had me procrastinating and waffling around. I honestly wish I could have done this story without having to define them at all. I felt like the whole point of those characters is that everyone has friends and other loved ones who matter to them personally, but to others a few steps away they become an unknown piece of the collective whole. Who Luna and Celestia's long-ago friends may have been is important to them, but to an audience it's enough to simply have the idea of their friends, with their individual identities unknown. I had to portray them somehow, though, but didn't want to just make up a bunch of random OCs. So, the character designs of their friends are...complicated. I'll leave it at that for the moment. If you don't like how they look, just think of them as placeholders for ponies we don't know.
So, was it worth all the effort and time spent trying to figure out what to do with this idea? Hard to say...this is the sort of thing that makes me feel kinda nervous in a way I don't get from just a silly random joke picture. Probably should have just stuck with writing it instead of comic form. In any case, I don't think I'll be doing something this complicated again.
[November 24] Thanks muchly for all the positive feedback, all. It feels good to see my little story received so well, and I'm starting to feel like I should remove that paragraph about wondering whether this was worthwhile. So I really appreciate all the comments, even if I don't reply to each of them.

Eh, to be honest, I was never satisfied with how this thing turned out. I wanted to write it as a fanfic, but I suck at writing, so I tried to shorten it into a comic instead. The story I was trying to tell didn't condense very well, though, so I was always a little worried it might've ended up a little confusing. The gist is that it was supposed to be an origin story for several aspects of pony life, like why they control the sun and moon, and how cutie marks first came to be.
Basically, their sun was dying and their world was going to end, so Luna and Celestia decide to have one last party with the ponies they care about ("And that's how Equestria was made!" as Pinkie Pie once said). The other characters weren't supposed to be anyone specific, just placeholders to represent their friends. Once they're all together, they start thinking about how much their friends mean to them, and without really meaning to, they become the center of a spell that links everyone together. The spell reaches out to each pony who's important to them, then those ponies think about their other relationship bonds, and so on, as it branches out exponentially to eventually connect pretty much every pony in the world in a giant network. From there, a little bit of magic from each pony traces those connections back the other direction to focus through Luna and Celestia, turning them into the first alicorns while creating a new sun and the Elements of Harmony.
It probably would have worked better as a written story.

Eh, it would have made much more sense as a fic, but I was incapable of writing any dialogue, so I tried to condense it as much as possible into comic form. And because of that, there would have been WAY too much text if I'd made the characters actually speak, so I tried to make some vague narration and let the images otherwise hopefully speak for themselves. Plus it was based entirely on season 1, so it's pretty much incompatible with the show's canon now. Honestly, I always felt like this was grossly inadequate for the story I wanted to tell, but it was the best I could manage.
Trying to be as brief as I can, basically, it was supposed to be an origin story for a bunch of stuff: cutie marks, the Elements of Harmony, how Celestia and Luna become alicorns, and why ponies need to control their sun and moon (and possibly something I'm forgetting, because this is 2 1/2 years old now). I was drawing on a few specific scenes from the show, "Everypony everywhere has a special connection with her friends," and the way Celestia looked at her cutie mark after reading the letter that said "Sometimes, the thing you think will cause you to lose friends and feel left out can actually be the thing that helps you make your closest friends and realize how special you are." Also, a little bit from how Pinkie said a party was "how Equestria was made." So I thought that maybe the reason ponies control their sun is because it's not actually a star, but a giant ball of magic that ponies created when their planet's original star died (even if a star simply burning out harmlessly isn't all that realistic). I figured a spell that big was too much for one pony, so it would have to draw a little bit of magic from all of them, and if ponies all have a magical connection to everyone they care about, and each of them have other ponies they care about as well, that would link their entire species together in one gigantic web. And because it seemed to me that the Elements of Harmony act like a magical magnifying glass to focus magic more than actually create any itself, and considering how powerful they already are from just six ponies, imagine what they could do if they drew magic from all the ponies in the world. So Luna and Celestia activate a spell that permanently links all ponies everywhere together to create a new sun and moon, and turning themselves into alicorns in the process. And from that day forward, each pony gains a cutie mark to represent their own place in helping to sustain the life of their world.
Kinda hard to squeeze all of that into a comic, so hopefully that's less confusing.

This is beautiful, I appreciate the work put into it, and think that you did an excelent job with the placeholder ponies to convey the message. There's really not much more to say about this - technically I can't find any issue, your work is crisp and the pony designs fit really well in the world of MLP, so a hat tip to you for the great work.

So, eh... Why is there no cutie marks in this story?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
CrunchNugget In reply to pidopay [2012-01-05 10:53:09 +0000 UTC]
Well, it was intended to be an origin story for quite a few things, cutie marks being one of them. Since a cutie mark's purpose is to show a pony's unique place in the world, I figured it would make total sense for them to have first appeared during a burst of magic that bound the entire world together.
There's actually one panel near the end where they all have flashes of light over them showing that they're all getting their marks right then as a result of that spell, because cutie marks didn't exist until that moment. After that panel, there's only one more with characters in it, and they're all facing away, making Luna's the only one partially visible.
That was probably more explanation than you wanted, huh?

pidopay In reply to CrunchNugget [2012-01-06 17:07:23 +0000 UTC]
No, that was a very good explanation. Only though I think the cutie marks should be visible on the last panel... If you look at their flanks then maybe you can see what I mean... If, for example, applejack stood there her cutie mark would have been visible.

CrunchNugget In reply to pidopay [2012-01-06 20:52:55 +0000 UTC]
Hmm... that's sort of a tough call. When they face directly away from the "camera" in the show, their marks aren't visible, but then I also angled them very slightly here, so it's hard to say. Here is the closest screenshot comparison I can find. Are my characters more angled than that? I'm not entirely sure, so it probably coulda gone either way, really.

Yeah, I realize it's a little vague. The journal entry I linked at the top of the description might explain it better, if you want to take the time to read a longish description.
As for Luna and Celestia...well, they had to come from somewhere, so I like to think they started as regular ponies.

Not true. If you remember the end of that episode, the flag that was erected was of Celestia and Luna. Therefore, it is only logical to assume that the two sisters defeated Discord BEFORE Equestria, as a country, was founded.

I keep throwing my money at the screen...
There is so much in this comic right now, you don't even know.
You just boiled down the key essences of this fandom, added some diced Wild Mass Guessing, hit the 'crushed ice' button, then fed the resulting gel to a little puppy whom you then tucked into bed with a glass of warm milk, a hand-stitched quilt, and a teddy bear you bought at a Salvation Army thrift store.
You see where I'm going with this?
