Description
So I finally finished something for this story. And it only took half a year! Not even joking about that. This origin story idea has been in my mind (originally intended to be a fan fiction) pretty much unchanged since way back in May, so a few details are possibly slightly outdated. If you care at all about why it took me so long, or my extra thoughts on this thing look at this journal entry , because I don't want this description to become as long as the picture itself. I hope this comic is clear enough for people to understand my story from the picture alone, but there are also a lot of details I would have included in the written version that couldn't really make it into the comic form, even as large as this is.
I actually finished an earlier version of this more than a week ago. In that one, I used dialogue instead of narration, but I felt like it just wasn't working. The story was too condensed, so the dialogue felt forced. So now I have this slightly odd alternative, and I realize it looks a little awkward in a few places how the ponies are all just standing there. So keep in mind that they are conversing, just that anything they would have said in such a small space would have been pretty redundant to the narration, so I felt it was better to leave it out entirely and let their interactions be somewhat vague. At least that way I didn't have to worry about using Ye Olde Ponyish due to the Nightmare Night episode.
I don't think I could ever be completely satisfied with this, and there are still things that bother me about it, but it's a lot better than the other version, in my opinion. Bleh, though, this thing has been molding in my head for so long, I can't even tell anymore if the ideas I wanted to express came through at all. I really hope this thing makes sense and everything...I keep bouncing back and forth trying to decide if I mostly like how this turned out or not.
Last thing I want to mention here is about Luna and Celestia's friends. That was the one aspect of this project that most had me procrastinating and waffling around. I honestly wish I could have done this story without having to define them at all. I felt like the whole point of those characters is that everyone has friends and other loved ones who matter to them personally, but to others a few steps away they become an unknown piece of the collective whole. Who Luna and Celestia's long-ago friends may have been is important to them, but to an audience it's enough to simply have the idea of their friends, with their individual identities unknown. I had to portray them somehow, though, but didn't want to just make up a bunch of random OCs. So, the character designs of their friends are...complicated. I'll leave it at that for the moment. If you don't like how they look, just think of them as placeholders for ponies we don't know.
So, was it worth all the effort and time spent trying to figure out what to do with this idea? Hard to say...this is the sort of thing that makes me feel kinda nervous in a way I don't get from just a silly random joke picture. Probably should have just stuck with writing it instead of comic form. In any case, I don't think I'll be doing something this complicated again.
[November 24] Thanks muchly for all the positive feedback, all. It feels good to see my little story received so well, and I'm starting to feel like I should remove that paragraph about wondering whether this was worthwhile. So I really appreciate all the comments, even if I don't reply to each of them.

Simply beatiful. Just like the show, you used ponies to convey real world problems and answers, and just the pure joy of life. This almost made me cry. Sometimes, people just make you realize that there is still good in the world. Namaste.

It's...okay.
Maybe it's just me but the message conveyed as kinda obvious and didn't really hit me hard or anything like that.
Maybe the use of a random OCs didn't help (I realise they are based on friends of your or something? That's cool for you but really means nothing to ME as a viewer).
I was trying to decide what you were going for with the six of them.
If there were six to only represent the elements of harmony, or if the other four were the 'stars' that aided in Luna's escape because of that orbital view, or if that was just to try and show their 'connection' bit?
Not really sure on it the picture just.
Sorry.

Seeing that I was trying as hard as possible to work with the themes of the show itself, the fact that the message is potentially somewhat obvious isn't really that surprising, or necessarily a bad thing. Really, all I did was take some elements of the show and boost them up a few notches. The show is all about friendship being magic, so I just wanted to show that idea on a larger scale.
Now the main point I want to respond to...
Their five friends (pretty much had to be five, one for each of the elements, with Luna and Celestia sharing the 6th) actually have very carefully chosen designs. I know it's not obvious, but they -might- not actually be OCs.
I honestly agree with you on the point of random OCs who have no meaning to the viewer, and have myself said almost the exact same thing elsewhere. Trying to figure out a way to avoid that was probably responsible for at least 2 months of my lingering in making this. I wished there was a way I could have avoided defining them at all, but they had to look like something. So I patterned their designs in a way that was supposed to allow multiple interpretations, one of which with more meaning than you'd think from first glance, and with some fairly large implications.
Ah, hell, I might as well just say it, since nobody seems to be picking up on the 2nd interpretation. Back when I started this, not only had we ever seen just three elderly living characters in the show, but there wasn't even the suggestion of others until the mention of a retirement home in the Luna episode. And one of them even looked just as old in a flashback. That got me wondering why old age seemed to be so rare for ponies. Add in the fact that I felt like the friends probably should have also been affected strongly by this magic, and I decided if it can make Luna and Celestia immortal, it could also give their friends greatly extended lifespans.
So...I designed the friends as younger versions of Granny Smith, the elderly pegasus we saw in Cloudsdale, that groundskeeper guy who was tending the royal gardens, and my guess at what Pinkie's grandmother (mentioned in Giggle at the Ghostly) may have looked like. That created some complications, though, and left 1 open slot I had to fill. Since two of the four were grandmothers of our modern heroes, I designed the last friend as my best guess of how one of Rarity's ancestors may have looked. Technically, that still makes him an OC, I suppose.
It seemed weird to have only some of them related to the modern cast, though, so I gave the pegasus (convenient that her body is already a shade of blue) a somewhat multi-hued, spiky mane to imply a potential relation to Rainbow Dash. The lineage would probably quite distant since they didn't seem to recognize each other, and since all of this was implying she was as old as Celestia, she could have had any number of offspring over the years.
Similarly, I made the Pink one look a lot like Pinkie Pie, with very similar colors, and a wavy mane to be a cross between Pinkie's two hairstyles.
Then if people noticed that many ancestral relationships (which apparently they didn't), I hoped they would make the assumption that the groundskeeper guy could be Fluttershy's ancestor, and the fact that he's an earth pony could be why she's such a weak flier. And then it even has a slight implication that if he was the original element of kindness, that could be the reason the Canterlot animals ran from Fluttershy--they thought she was some kind of impostor. I also realize he seems to be a blank flank in the show, but I'm assuming that's just an animation mistake they didn't bother fixing in later appearances. Even still, it's why I pushed him partially off the side of the panel where they're all getting cutie marks. Also, that could be why he has a job as prominent as working at the castle--he knows Celestia personally. By the way, a slight hint at his possible identity is the fact that his blanket in the flashback is the color of his hat in modern days.
With the friends all accounted for, that just left the implication that Twilight could be distantly related to the sisters, since they started as normal unicorns in my story.
Kind of a convoluted train of thought, I know, and probably even sorta weird. Funny thing is, though, we've never actually seen any of the elderly characters interact with the princesses, so it's not utterly impossible that they're ancient friends off screen, probably even unknown to other ponies. However, even as slow-aging as all this would make them, they were finally too old (and one or two might not be alive anymore) to help fight Nightmare Moon by the time she returned, so they'd passed on their elements by that point. All of that could also imply our modern Elements of Harmony could potentially have verrry long lifespans too, though not necessarily.
Ultimately, all of that is pretty far-fetched, and I didn't want to outright say, "Yes, it's them," but rather make people wonder if it could be them. That's most of the reason why I didn't actually show their cutie marks--even I don't know for certain if it is them or not, just that it could be. In the end, I wanted their identities to be ambiguous and open to interpretation. And for that reason, I've been really vague in answering people's questions about the identity of their friends, until this comment. Whichever way people want to see them is fine, because in a way they're really just placeholders for the idea of Luna and Celestia's long-ago friends. Apparently I made it too subtle though, so everyone one is assuming OCs are the only option.
Sorry for such a long reply, but it was kind of a complicated explanation. Maybe none of that improves it to you, but that's okay.

Firstly, holy-crap, long XD
I read it all though.
I actually congratulate you for the massive amount of effort you put into this to keep it canon and spin a story in the pictures, even if we didn't pick up on it. Looking back at it now seeing what you say, I totally understand what you are talking about and can see the links now.
It kinda clashes with my headcanon but that's no real problem, that happens a lot, the fandom is fantastic because of its varying opinions on things XD
I like your idea for the animals reacting negatively to Fluttershy because she is an 'imposter', that was a nice, well thought out touch.
You really have covered all of the bases here, and for this you certainly deserve a fav and a watch. As a fanfic writer I can totally respect the amount of effort you put into making this fill canon spots
I also thank you for taking the time to write such a long reply for me, shows you clearly care about your work
This kinda makes me curious though, since you seemed to have thought the canon out very well....who do you think the four stars were that released NMM from the moon?

Actually, I couldn't figure it out. In many of the frames that showed the stones, they didn't even bother making them look unique. Like right as Nightmare Moon smashes them, 4 out of 5 had an identical octagon shape. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to tell which symbol is which element, so I just kinda guessed.

So, I start making a fancomic which contains Celestia and Luna running from Discord's chaos, finding 5 other friends and create the Elements of Harmony. And now I see this Luna, Celestia and 5 other ponies creating the Elements of Harmony.

Oof, I know how annoying that can be. Months back, I was about to draw Pinkie Pie with her hair made of cotton candy, when suddenly this started popping up everywhere. And then another idea I -almost- drew was to have Rarity standing there dramatically, saying, "As Celestia is my witness, I shall never be unfabulous again!" Cue Sisterhooves Social, and other than replacing "unfabulous" with "sisterless" I would have predicted the exact joke, had I gone through with that picture. Those annoyed me, and they were both just silly little random joke picture.
And then I'd always get seriously nervous any time I saw any discussion about how Celestia controlled the sun, or any themes similar to what I was planning for this story. I remember one time in Egophiliac's livestream, everyone, including her, started theorizing about how a star could be moved around in the sky, and I was just sitting there going, "Oh crap, oh crap, oh crap!" as I worried they were going to come up with the idea that their sun itself is the product of a spell, and is nowhere near the size of a normal star. Very relieved when they moved onto another topic.
But, on the bright side anyway, at least my story didn't really talk about Discord beyond the vague implication of chaos, so it wouldn't be hard for yours to be pretty different from mine.

Indeed, that sort of stuff is usually quite startling. In EQD, when they announced the Hearth Warming's Eve episode and started saying it would completely annihilate the origin fanfictions, I was also running the message "oshit" countless times in my head.
But yeah, the way the story will develop will be different. Still, the main cast will have the exact same number of ponies. Including the mare/stallion ratio. Yep. It's also going to be 2 colts and 3 mares besides Celestia and Luna even though one can't feel slightly bothered by knowing his idea was already conceived, it's also sort of funny to have this sort of coincidences happening. I mean, just look at the chances.

CrunchNugget In reply to Cave-Shinobi [2011-11-25 16:02:39 +0000 UTC]
The Hearth's Warming synopsis announcement was more ironic than anything to me, since it came so closely timed to me finally finishing this thing. It's like, "Spend 6 months completing a story idea at the pace of an unconscious slug, then find out right as you finally finish that there's an official version coming up."
So while it did irk me a teensy bit at first ("Whyyy, WHYYYYY didn't I finish this weeks agooooo?!") I pretty quickly decided that being disproved by canon AFTER the fact is just fine. Just as long as I got my idea out before it became invalid, I'm okay with however wrong it turns out to be.
And then who knows, maybe the Hearth's Warming episode will surprise everyone and not actually give any real answers at all. Maybe IT will be a fictional version even to the ponies.

Beast...
I imagined some sort of darkness related calamity struck, had some negative psychological effects on ponies or rather it symbolized negativity, despair, anger, estrangement, stressful situations, and other evidence suggesting that perhaps people can only be kind because the world allowed them to be.
And yet, through it all, these ponies, with their unyielding spirit, hope, loyalty and character come together, apologetically, kindly, and re-unite, causing a spark of happiness within their few worn souls as sweet as a cup of water to a mare in hell, that leads to a fire of passion and tenacity within everypony, changing the desolate destiny of their world, further maturing their cynical perspectives, and attached a new and insightful importance to the "Pony" condition. That's what Equestria is built upon; that's what real happiness is built upon.
I enjoyed this comic, really, especially when listening to some calm guitar brony instrumental. Stuff like this really makes you think about your perspective on life, its people, and yourself. 2 hooves up.
