With the increased traffic to Mars to visit Ana Bray at the Hellas Basin, some Guardians have braved the conditions and sought out Meridian Bay, some to loot caches long forgotten, some to explore the ruins of Freehold, and some simply to remember the days before the Red War, when Valus Ta'aurc was the biggest threat to the City.
The assumption was that the whole area was empty; with the Garden destroyed, the Vex had no reason to stay, and most Cabal had joined the Red Legion or been executed.
Many Guardians were thus shocked to find two Cabal, in Siege Dancer regalia, standing guard at the side of an abandoned road. The Phalanx and Legionnaire stood side-by-side at attention, weapons at the ready. The various Guardians that encountered the Cabal debated heatedly their purpose. Some said that they guarded a hidden trove of weapons and technology; others argued that they were simply waiting for a Valus that would never come.
An intrepid Warlock decided to study the two Cabal to gain knowledge on their behavior outside of combat. Setting up in a skyscraper across the road, she watched the pair for weeks, noting their movements.
When a Sparrow flew past, the two would raise their rifles, sometimes even firing off a few rounds. However, the Guardian would soon be gone, and they would lower their weapons with slumped shoulders.
At one point in the study, the Legionnaire suddenly sat itself down in the red dust. It began to fiddle with its helmet and respirator, first casually out of boredom, but soon it was frantically yanking at the helmet as though it was being choked. It wasn't until the Phalanx swung its shield into its companion's face that it stopped. The Legionnaire sat dazed for a moment, then picked itself back up and stood at attention once more.
When the Warlock finally departed, the two Cabal still stood, silent and unmoving as the dead tree between them. She couldn't bring herself to kill them.
