Description
The blue little flame flickered in and out, struggling to grow more than the size of her claw.
She never had trouble with fire magic before. To be honest, it came easily to her, like just pressing a button. But now, as she decided to continue to learn more advanced magic, she just couldn't do it. It felt like the button was stuck, and no matter how much she pressed, nothing would come out.
She never realized how her emotions truly affected her ability to do magic.
She's been realizing a lot of things lately.
Ember really had been ignorant to a lot that was going on in her family's lives. At least.. to how they were feeling, felt about things.
She doesn't totally regret some of the things she did, she was in the right to tell her father not to take in another child, to be suspicious of Tony.
But maybe she shouldn't have been so harsh, he was just a child. He didn't know about their parents like she did, he didn't know of their mother's... depisement of them. All he knew is that Ember was his sister and she hated him.
Then how she treated him and Lee when they came back from the forest...
The small flame died out and she could only sigh.
Was there anything she could do to gain back favor with her family? Anything that she could do as an apology?
She wasn't entirely sure. Maybe she'd never get their forgiveness. That's probably what she deserved at this point, especially from Tony.
"E-Ember?.."
She blinked, turning to the voice of her father in surprise. He was... talking to her?
He was looking at her, actually looking at her. Though he seemed nervous, and his hands seemed to be fidgeting in the pockets of his coat.
Lee looked away from her when she didn't respond, hesitating, before walking up to stand beside her where she was seated between the bushes.
"S-Saw you were.. having some t-trouble with the fire..." He looked at her from the corner of his eye, just barely visible through his bangs. She looked away as he continued. "I never thought y-you'd have trouble with magic.. especially with f-fire.."
"... Yeah, me neither.." Why was he speaking to her so easily now? "I don't really know what's wrong, I just..."
She raised her paw again, staring at it as no flames appeared. No words. She didn't know what to say.
"M-Magic is pretty fickle.." Lee continued, tail swishing slightly behind him. "I find it easier to perform when I have a clear head."
"O-Oh..."
What does she say? What can she say? She wants to apologize but for what exactly? Why are the words so hard to find-
"I'm sorry Ember."
A spark of blue. She looked up at her father in confusion.
"What?"
Lee looked at her for a moment before looking back to the trees ahead of them with a tired sigh.
"I-I did a lot of thinking these past couple days, and it was... rough. I couldn't figure out why I was.. avoiding you, you're my child and I shouldn't be ignoring you like that but.. something was bothering me and I wanted to get to the root of it before I ignored that too." He took a hand out his pocket and rubbed his head. "It resulted in a lot of headaches and nightmares but.. I figured it out. Of course I still have more thinking to do, it isn't quite over yet, but there's one thing I'm sure of at least.."
He looked at her with those soft teal eyes and Ember couldn't understand why they had made her so angry once.
"I'm so sorry Ember, for avoiding you and yelling at you.. you deserve better than getting shouted at, I shouldn't have done it. And..." He looked conflicted for a moment, glancing behind him for a moment. "I'm.. I-I'm sorry for worrying you so much all these years. You should be focusing on yourself and I've been no help.."
Ember felt her heart clench in her chest at these words, confused between whether she wanted to exhale out of relief or inhale in genuine shock. She didn't expect apologies for these things yet..
"I'm really sorry. It must've been hard for you, right?"
Relief is good.
"... I-It was.."
She looked back to her paw and saw the small blue flame finally steady itself. She still had her part to say.
"I-I'm.. I'm a-also sorry!" She quickly stammered out, looking up at her father in distress. Lee blinked, confused at the sudden desperation in her voice.
"O-Oh?"
"Yes! I-I'm sorry!" The flame in her paw danced as she quickly tried to get her words and thoughts out. "I shouldn't have been so insensitive to you! I-I know your injuries hurt you more than physically.. I shouldn't have gone around and started shouting about them at you. I've been so.. rude, and I'm only now just realizing what I've said and done.. to both you and.. Tony."
If Lee looked confused before he seemed outright shocked by that, eyes wide as he stared at her. "E-Ember you..?"
The blue flame grew larger as she looked up at her father, feeling as lost as she looked.
"I- How do I say sorry? To both of you? H-How can I make up for what I did.. said?"
Lee's surprise melted to sadness, a small frown on his face as he looked at her. "I will still forgive you, no matter what you do to make up for it." He faced back to the scenery in front of them. "But... no matter what you do, how nice you try to be... Tony doesn't owe you his forgiveness. I-I... I don't know if he'll ever forgive you.."
It hurt to hear, that she may never be forgiven.
She accepted it as the most likely thing to happen, if she ever did figure out what to do for her family in return for being so dismissive and rude to them. Tony out of him and Lee was the most in the right to never forgive her for her actions. But hearing it from her so optimistic father.. it was made it to be the most likely outcome.
She looked back to the flame, a bright blue, different from the usual reds she was used to. She briefly wondered if the difference in color was what allowed Lee to stand this close to it without shaking so much and staring at it...
Or maybe her father was making progress with his fears...
The flame grew larger, lively against the greens of the nature around them.
Even if Tony never forgave her for everything she did to him, she won't just let it be and avoid him. He was still her brother, she couldn't just leave his life after leaving such a negative impact.
She had to make it up to him.
