He looked up at his parents with anxiety, forcing himself to keep his confident posture and not scratch at the hair pricking at his neck. If he showed any uncertainty in what he said his parents might react badly and dismiss him. He had to say it, he couldn't continue living with this.
His father spoke first, with a grimace and a confused look on his face.
"Y-You.. are saying you're... a boy..?" He didn't sound too mad, maybe he could just explain it to him further. He nodded slightly, opening his mouth to speak when his mother cut in with a scoff.
"That doesn't make any sense, you're a girl, you were born that way." His mother waved a hand at him vaguely. "Its in your genes, its basic biology, dear."
His father glanced at her, looking more conflicted than he did before. It was hard to side with either your child or your wife, he guessed, but if he could even gain a tiny bit of support in this..
"Y-Yes, you're right mother.." He tried not to sink down from her stare. "But, I'm a boy, its just something that feels right, in here." He raised a paw and put it over his heart, face heating slightly. It was embarrassing to say, but he didn't know how else to explain this.
He didn't even know what 'this' was, all he knew is that.. he was a boy, and nothing could change how he felt about it. It was just what it was, he couldn't bring himself to lie about it, he wanted the sting in his chest to stop.

His mother made a face at what he said while his father continued to look conflicted.
"You're just confused dear, you don't know what you're talking about." His mother shook her head and looked at him with sad eyes. "I mean, you were only hatched a couple weeks ago! How about I help you tidy up your hair and make us a nice dinner, N-"
"Stop!" He shouted loudly enough so he wouldn't have to hear that name, he didn't want to yell at her but he couldn't bring himself to hear it. Mother looked at him with anger and he tried to find something to say to soothe her.

"I'm not confused, I know what I feel!" He looked between the two of them, trying to will them in some way to believe him. "I- Even if this is just some.. phase." The word tasted sour in his mouth, but he had to convince them in some way to let him be who he felt he was. "If this is just a phase, couldn't you just support me? Until it.. i-it fades off..?"
His mother looked as if she was going to yell at him, dismiss him again when his father touched a hand to her shoulder.
"Hey now, sh- eh, uh.. he.. has a point. If its just a phase what's the harm in indulging our kid?" Mother made a noise and shook her head.
"Our daughter is not a boy! If other gro found out about this it could tarnish our reputation!" Father faltered at the mention of their reputation.
He scratched at the floorboards anxiously with his back claws. Right, they were a family of influence, a business that went back generations. If they lost their reputation and favor among other businesses, it could mean the loss of their family's fortune. Guilt started to weigh down on his back, how could he threaten the family? Their businesses? The very thing he was born to inherit? He himself was tearing down the very things his parents gifted to him, was he maybe being selfish?

His parents continued to argue back and forth in front of him, all he could do was sit and maybe have some input if they directed a question to him. Mother was relentless in her arguing, constantly saying 'What if someone found out?' and mentioning father's family. He never actually met his father's side of the family, his siblings at least. He had seen pictures, when they went to visit grandpa, of his father with younger siblings. At some point they stopped appearing alongside father in family portraits and when he asked, father responded with a slap.
It wasn't his business, he was told, focus on being the perfect future of their family.

Eventually they seemed to have had enough of arguing, mother turning away from both of them with her arms crossed. She had a sad yet angry look on her face, the urge to go comfort her was there but father turned to him to tell him of their decision.
"We have decided," He looked at mother for a moment before back at him, "to allow you to go on with this phase, but you will not be known as our child to the public. We will tell them you are a distant nephew of ours that we took under our care."
He felt excitement flicker strongly in his chest, staring at his father with wide eyes as he continued. "We will say that our own daughter, is going to be raised and kept out of sight until we have decided she is ready to face the world. Which means you will have to both go outside the property for schooling and be taught here about how to continue the business."
He couldn't believe it, they agreed! He's- They- He's going to feel happy! It sucks that he won't be seen as his parents' child, but he could manage! They'll be together either way!
His father kneeled down in front of him and placed a hand on his shoulder, the hard grip pulling him out of his thoughts immediately. It kind of hurt.. "F-Father..?"
"In return for allowing you this, you will take over the business. You will work harder than what you had to before. There is no longer an exit door." He felt something in his heart constrict and the high from before disappear entirely. "You will take over once you reach maturity, there is no time to waste on other things. You will not disappoint us."
He swallowed and nodded.
It was a fine trade. He gets what he wants to be, and he will have to work thrice as hard for his family.
Its an honor, really..

"Good. You will go by Atticus Shou." Father let go and stood, nodding back him. "Go get cleaned up, we're going to find you a school outside of the property."
Atticus nodded once more and hurried out the room, a small smile on his face.
He had a name..
