"What?"

Tony stood, the previously surprised look on his face morphing into something she didn't recognize on him.

"What are you trying to do, Ember?"

Ember didn't know he could make a face like that. One with so much disgust and discomfort.
Irritation. Annoyance.

She said nothing for a moment, no thoughts came to her as she was hit with the realization that she's never seen Tony look like this. At her like this.
He raised a brow as her silence continued far longer than it should. She pulled her thoughts together and stepped through the bushes, Tony's manipulated flame swirling off into fractured pieces.
"I-I don't know what you mean, I'm just trying to... talk." She kept her eyes on the flame behind Tony, so much easier than looking him directly in the eyes. "That's not a crime is it?"

"It is when you've never bothered to speak to me before, much less offer help." The hardness in his voice made her wince. She couldn't argue with that. "So, again, what are you doing. What do you want from me?"
Ember turned away, staring into the trees a bit nervously. Straight to the point, this was.. different, very different to what she expected as well. Honestly would've preferred he refuse and scamper away from her like she thought he would. Its what he would usually do if she showed up anywhere he was at, did he reach the end of his tolerance?

"I don't.. WANT anything from you I just.." This was so hard, talking about stuff like this was so hard how could anyone do it? "I-I'm trying to... make.. amends.."

"Amends?"
It didn't sound as much as the question it was meant to be, instead sounding as blank as her mind.

"Yes, to... t-to make up.. for what I've... done. To you." She tried to drag her gaze to his face, to seem more sincere. Her eyes instead barely grazed his claws before turning to the trees on the other side of her. "I've realized how terrible I was being so.. I'm trying to not be that way-"
"Stop."

Ember finally looked up at the dark colored quad, confused at his sudden interruption. "But-"

"No, stop it." He scrunched his face, leaning away like her words repelled him. "I don't want to hear any of that 'amends' stuff. You make it sound like you just ate the last Dazzu in the cupboard, that is not anywhere close to how you treated me."
"What?" Ember frowned, lowering her ears. "I'm- I'm not trying to make it sound like that, I'm just trying to apologize and.." She grimaced. This was so much more different than she pictured. "... I can't put the words together right. I just want to say I'm sorry."
Tony stared at her, the irritation from before fading to something in the same vein, but she wasn't too sure. She didn't have the time to analyze each new face he made at her, she was too busy trying to salvage this situation. It was supposed to be easy, awkward, they were supposed to ease into being able to talk to each other before Ember managed to find the words to apologize properly. Lee told her it wouldn't be easy to apologize to Tony but this was something else entirely.

"I don't want your apology."

The words were said, just a sound in her ears, when suddenly it felt like her heart was dunked in icy water.
"W..What?" Her voice sounded loudly in her head, when it was simply a whisper. This couldn't...

"I don't want your meaningless apology, Ember. They're just words, and I can't trust yours." Tony almost glared at her, though, it must mean twice as much as a regular glare since she's never seen him do it before. "What? Did you expect me to be like pa? Accept your apology with a sad smile and forget everything you've done, just so you can feel better?"
She shook her head numbly, her mind straining to wrap around what he's saying to her. "N-No, I don't want that, I've never-"
He continued like she didn't speak. "Sorry, but I guess I'm more like you than I wished. I don't forget easily, nor do I want to. To forget what you've said to me is unfair to myself, and you know what? I'm tired of being treated unfairly."
He stepped towards her and she stumbled back, mind scrambling for words, anything to make him stop. This isn't how it was supposed to happen.
"H-How could you not accept it? I'm-I'm trying t-to make up for what I did, how could you not-"
Tony scoffed, it was loud, rough with emotion.

"How could I not? How could I, is the real question Ember." He began to slowly walk around her, his wings flaring with his growing irritation. Each time he neared her, she felt like she was in front of a bonfire. "Do you truly understand how you treated me? You said you did but did you really think about it? How I came into this world with a pa who told me how wonderful it was, how I had a family who loved me dearly and would always be there for me? That I had an older sister, who would defend me from anything I could face? Do you know how I felt when I finally realized how wrong he was?"
His eyes looked dark, resentment and anger etched deeply into his face. Ah, that's what it was, it was resentment. "You ignored me everyday until I started going to the Nook, you'd barely even look at me. Then Lee starts taking me with Alma so I could make friends and instead I get bullied, shamed for being talkative, loud, happy."

She remembered when he was that young, but she couldn't say anything when he looked at her like that.

"I came home with cuts and bruises, Lee tended to them but what did you do? You stalked me, you watched me as I went about my day. I tried to convince myself it was simply because you were going to protect me, like pa said you would. I know better now." Ember didn't know that he had noticed her at that time, she simply wanted to make sure he wasn't getting into fights like her. "Then you tell me, I was never family. I'd never be family to you, no matter the blood we shared. You made me cry and all you did in return was glare at me and go to sleep, leaving me alone in the dark with you." She just wanted to protect Lee, he was becoming so worried about the state Tony was in when he came home.
"I was rejected by you, my only sister, and my own father couldn't defend me from your hate."
He wasn't yelling at her, he was speaking low, almost gently. Words filled with resentment and a deep sadness, but he spoke clearly so he could get his message across to her. He didn't want forgive her, he didn't even want to hear her regret.
"Then when pa took me on a little flight one morning..." Ember blinked, looking up at Tony curiously as he finally looked away, his expression growing pained. A flight? This must be Lee's accident, but she's never heard Lee talk about the details, Tony especially never spoke of that time.
"He noticed, that I had been avoiding you, and he wanted to cheer me up. He said we'd fly over the forest and head back home to make breakfast. Only ten minutes.." He shuddered, despite being scorching hot. She didn't.. know that they had been out because Tony was sad about her... A realization was settling on her shoulders. "It... I... It was.. one of the few worst moments of my life. I had just wanted to go back home, even if you were there. I rather face your glare than see pa's... b-blood."
He would've seen..
Ember took a step forward, feeling the guilt rise again in her chest. Tony never should've seen any of that, experienced that, no one should.
She tried to reach a paw out. "Tony..."
He snapped his gaze to her and smacked her paw away from him before it could make contact. The action surprised her, and he looked at her with rage.
"You lost your chance to hear me! To comfort me like an older sister should have! You knew I was with pa the whole time, I was there to see it all happen, yet what did you do instead? When you found me in front of his door, crying and shaking?" He turned himself to her, wings flared out behind him as the flame cast shadows across his face. She in turn lowered herself, staring up at him in fear. When had her brother grown so much bigger than her? "You told me it was my fault he was in pain. You said to me, as I cried and cowered to the ground that it was my fault he was in pain, that I had done that to him. You chased me away from my only home, Ember."
"N-No, that can't be true.." She bristled, struggling to recall the memory. Did she do that? She was so worried about where the two had disappeared to that when she found out what happened and where they were.. It was all a blur. "How could I do that, y-you were so young, I wouldn't have.."
"But you did!" He snapped, lashing his tail at Ember's sudden denial. "You told me I wasn't wanted! I ran and all you did was shout at me, you never bothered to go looking for me, Lee told me that you were all hiding at home during the attack during Warptide!"
Warptide.. "B-Because I had to make sure Lee was safe... You.. Where had you been when.." The attacks, the death of the Nova Tree, the plague..
"I was on the streets. When the attack had happened. I was already on low luck before but when the attack happened and grew were getting hurt all around me, I was terrified. The only reason I might have survived is because a group of wynglings found me and took me to a hideout."
"I-I'm.. I was glad you weren't hurt-"
"Were you really?! Because I spent the entirety of the plague thinking if I died in these tents, at least Ember would be happy!" He looked furious, but Ember could only absorb the fact that he had been one of the many who were sick. "I watched a gro die in front of me Ember, and all I could wonder is if that would be me! Would I die choking on my own breath without anyone ever knowing what happened to me? Would pa live the rest of his life not knowing that his sacrifice was a waste because I ended up dying alone anyways?"

They stared at each other for a while, Tony waiting for a response, Ember expecting to hear more horrible experiences Tony had to face alone.
Fire only crackled while they looked at each other with the same golden eyes.
They didn't notice when the rainclouds had come to darken the sky and area around them.

Tony huffed, face pulled into a grimace. "... And you ask why I won't take your apology. Just keep it to yourself."
He turned away, walking towards the fire and staring into it, debating something in his mind.
"..... I'm going to move out of the house."

That shook Ember out of her state of shock.
"Wh-What?!" She looked to him for more explanation, and he looked at her out of the corner of his eye.

"Yes, I was wondering about it before you interrupted me, but having this talk with you... I'm certain now, I don't want to be there putting a burden on Lee any longer than I already have." He looked back to the fire, his expression serious. "And all I ask of you is to never speak to me again."

Her stomach dropped, eyes wide as she felt the ground beneath her feet begin to spin. "..What? Never speak to you again- Tony, I can't do that."
He shot her a glare, eyes narrowed. "You've never had a problem doing it before, what's your issue now? I'm telling you to never see me again, exactly what you wanted."

She shook her head, she couldn't let this happen she had to fight this nausea. "No. No, I can't do that, Tony. Not now, I have to make it up to you, make all of it up to you." The ground seemed to steady as she settled on a singular thought. She couldn't let her brother slip out of her grasp, not again, not without showing him that she wants to change.
She won't fail this time, she won't bottle things up and leave them unresolved again.
She needs to put the effort, for both of them.

Tony growled in frustration, his eyes like daggers into her heart.
"I just said I don't want that! If you want to make it up to me then listen to what I said and leave me alone! I don't want anything to do with you!"

"I won't accept that, you and I will fix this, however long it takes." She stood steadfast against his glare, not flinching when he growled again and turned to face her entirely. He looked like he was going to attack her. "I'm not going to leave you alone, I never will. Not until we fix all of this, we have to talk with each other."

"I don't want to talk to you!"

He charged at her, as he yelled. She didn't know why she was as surprised as she was, she saw him start to get ready to fight with her.
Maybe it was because she's never known Tony to physically fight with anyone. He must be really upset with her.. Well, with everything he just told her, it makes sense. This is a build up of an entire childhood of repressed anger.
He shoved her back a couple feet, he had hit her with his shoulder instead of his head like she expected. It was the entire reason she merely stumbled around unsteadily instead of scrambling on the ground. Even when fighting he was still thoughtful of the other.
How could she have been so cruel to him?

She shook off the shock of being hit, watching as he lashed his tail and prepared to attack again.
"I won't back off easily Tony!"
He charged again, so she quickly dodged it and ran to the other side of the campfire. He skid to a stop, grass shredding under his claws before he just as quickly, ran to chase after her. It was a surprise to see him unhesitatingly jump over the fire, probably why he was able to pin her down so easily.
He growled in her face, his carnivore teeth finally being used for the intimidation they were meant for. His claws dug into her shoulders, pushing her into the ground.
"Why can't you just leave!" He barked, his eyes hazy as he glared into hers. "Just leave me alone! Stop trying to fix this, or I'll actually start hurting you!"
He was angry, she could tell that much. But in the same golden brown eyes they shared, she could see more.

He was sad. He was so, terribly, sad.

She had to take responsibility for it, she couldn't just leave him like that.
"I won't let you keep all the pain to yourself." He blinked, confused at the sudden soft sadness of her voice. "So if I have to kick your ass to get you to share that burden with me, then so be it!"
She brought up her back legs and kicked him off her while he was distracted, pulling herself up and tackling him before he could gather his wits.
It must've hurt, when her head made contact with his chest, her hard-headedness was also based on fact. He heard him wheeze, and eyed him carefully when he stumbled back, trying to reclaim the air that escaped him.
When he caught his breath, she moved to tackle him again, racing forwards with renewed speed. He learned from the first tackle and quickly raised up his front claws, catching her by the shoulders before she could make contact and shoving her off to the side roughly.
Ember landed on the ground, shoulder slamming with a thud that was sure to leave a bruise the next day. She looked up to see Tony raising up a claw to stomp down on her while she was down, so she rolled to avoid it and quickly stood. Swaying her tail in preparation, she jumped towards him, claws immediately latching onto whatever surface they could while she bit into the scruff of his neck.
Tony yelped as her teeth dug into his skin, shaking his head to try and get her to release him. Her claws dug further into his fur, back legs kicking to keep her hold on his neck steady. She began to growl as she pulled, trying to tip Tony over. If she got him to tumble down she could more easily get him pinned, as their difference in height put her to a disadvantage.
The dark blue quad let out a pained yell, instead starting to run around the small clearing, the jerky movements threatening to make Ember lose her grip. She scrabbled at his shoulders, trying to pull herself up so she wasn't hanging off him with her legs dragging on the ground, but he began to rapidly flap his wings. The movement startled her, his wings flapping harder and almost hitting her square in the face. The moment of distraction made her lose her place over his shoulders, making her slide down his side while she dug her teeth deeper into his scruff to hold on. He made more sounds of pain as he slowed to a stumble, his head being dragged to the side as she scrambled to find the right footing to pull him down.
He began to run again, Ember frantically trying to pull her legs up so they wouldn't drag on the ground, she didn't notice Tony running towards a tree till he rammed her into it.
She let go of him with a gasp, Tony immediately moving away as she fell to the ground, coughing and sputtering. Her organs did not enjoy getting crushed like that so suddenly. She had began to raise to her feet, Tony shaking out his fur and preparing for the next attack.

Then they heard the rustling of bushes, soft crunching of grass. A lot of grass crunching.
