Well if you know how to make a fading effect and what kind of varnish to use that wont turn yellow on white paint.

By fading effect, do you mean a gradient of color? If so, I would suggest buy a cheap sponge, cut it up and use each piece for a different color, so say a red to blue gradient-apply red on the top, blue on the bottom and with a clean sponge dab from top to bottom, top to bottom over and over til the colors start to blend gently - and then you get a fading effect, and it doesnt look like blocks of color, but be sure not to put too much paint on, otherwise it'll look messy. And you can use the same method for fading out one color, except what you'd be doing in this case, is apply the color to one part, and with the sponge, let the paint get a little tacky on the sponge (almost dry) and then bring the paint down (dabbing again) into the clear area, so you get a gentle fade of the color
For varnish I use a wood glaze - its really strong and if you apply a thin layer then it doesnt turn yellow on white paint and doesn't ruin any other color - and i tried it on all colors. Plus its REALLY cheap for a tin of glaze that will last you for like 30 million charms OR you can use PVA glue - which dries clear and doesnt stain, 3-4 coats should do fine.
The disadvantage of wood glaze is that you have to keep an eye ou so that when you hang your charms to dry a drop doesnt form at the bottom and you get a weird shape, but the drop can be removed with a toothpick. Other thing is that it takes at least 12 hours to dry - i leave my charms at the radiator to dry overnight.
Disadvantage of PVA is that its not water resistant, so if you get moisture on your charms they will get sticky and the glue might come off.
The good side to wood glaze is that its super strong and glossy and is resistant to water and all kinds of things. Good side of PVA is that its quicker, gives a matt finish and i guess glue has more uses around the house than wood glaze
Oh, and as for painting, once your sculpey is baked and cooled, you can paint it with acrylic paint straight onto the clay, wait til it dries and glaze it. Once you glazed it tho, you cant paint over it because it's hard to keep paint on a glossy surface, so be sure to finish the paint job before you glaze.
Hope that helps somewhat
Take care
