Description
This is Ahres, a member of the offshoot of humanity known as the Eternals. He was a major NPC in my Marvel superhero tabletop RPG game, as a mentor and trainer to the fledgling group of superheroes that were created by the Anomaly. This is the same anomaly that he and Dr. Doom used to enter the reality that my game was set in.
I used the same naming convention for Ahres that a number of other Eternals followed, which was taking a name that indicated which member of the Olympian Pantheon that they were the Earthly representative of: Zuras for Zeus; Thena for Athena; Phastos for Hephaestus; Thanos for Thanatos. Although already a formidable combatant before becoming the representative of Ares, Ahres did spend time learning from the Greek god of War. When the Eternals eventually came into conflict with the Olympians, Ahres faced off against his mentor, giving as good as he got for quite some time, before finally falling to the blade of Ares. Being an Eternal, though, death was just an inconvenience.
In the ages since that time, Ahres has learned much, including that immortality is both boring and wearing on one’s sanity. During the adventures of his “younger years”, he acquired several items of note, two of which I will mention here. The first was a pair of wrist bracers that granted him three abilities. First was an increase of his already superhuman combat abilities. Second was the ability to break matter down into energy, and use it to heal himself, or regain lost amounts of personal energy. Lastly, the bracers could open gateways that could cross vast distances of physical space.
The second item worth mentioning (and that came into play during the game) was a massive space station, ancient in age and created by a race that has so far left no other trace of their existence. This station has the ability to jump vast distances of physical space (not gate like the bracers), as well as travel through time, and breach the membrane separating the various realities of the multi-verse. A large section of this station has been set aside as a museum of sorts. It contains trophies of Ahres’ many conflicts; items of significance of both his friends and foes; unique pieces of art and literature from doomed cultures and worlds; a mausoleum containing the tombs of four of the people closest to Ahres.
Like a number of other characters I used in the “What if There Were Elseworlds” game, I originally created Ahres quite a number of years ago, back in the early or mid ‘80’s. He has been used in several games since, either as a NPC in one of my games, or occasionally played in someone else’s. Each time, I have had the opportunity to expand upon his history and personality. I hope to be able to continue to expand upon the character in the future. The necessary disclaimer: Dr Doom, Zuras, Thena, Thanos, Phastos and Eternals are property of Marvel Comics Group. There use here is as fanfiction, and no copywrite infringement is intended.
