saturday morning carto--...COMIC!horrible fact: in the original nes super mario bros you can get "infinite" lives from some turtles. but there's NO such a thing as infinite lives, if you get more that 126,,,you die....alone...killed by your own greed.

For anyone really nerdy who wants to know why that happens:
The number of lives is stored as an 8-bit signed integer.
An integer is signed when the most significant bit is set or not to tell you if the number is negative, and the rest of the bits are used to store the numerical value.
Since the range of 8 bits (2^8) is 0-255, remove one usable bit from the start and you get the number range 0-127, or in binary 0000 0000 to 0111 1111.
If you add 1 to 127 you get 1000 0000. Since the most significant bit is now set the new value is interpreted by the processor as -127.
Having negative live is not healthy, so you die.

You were doing well until you got to what 1000 0000 in binary means in decimal. It's actually -128. I know, it's confusing since signed integers in the modern 2's-complement system for negatives are actually not closed under negation, but it's true.
Another thing: You can safely have exactly -128 lives, as long as you don't get another one or beat the level (you have to die next IOW). This is due to how the game will happily underflow your life count and never notice it went negative, since it only checks life count after you die or beat a level (notice your life count isn't on the HUD, but only appears on the "pre-level" screen?)
