When I was a kid (the 1970s), our family needed to make a trip to downtown Milwaukee, really late at night; it was on that trip that we passed through a darkened street whose sole illumination seemed to come from a hole-in-the-wall movie theater.
While I never found out which theater it was, the image stays with me even today. To my young eyes, it looked like it was haunted.
Last week, I rewatched my DVD of Grindhouse ( 2007 ), and the accompanying feature about real-life theaters that showed such movies brought it back to me. Since I didn't start driving until the early 80s, and I've only seen roughly three or four movies downtown, I don't know if Milwaukee ever had any grindhouse theaters.

It did have a porno theater... the Princess.
