1. always highlight on the opposite side to the light source
2. leave a border of the base colour all the way around the gem

I know it's been awhile since you posted this, but I wondered how to highlight a cut gem. The one you have here isn't cut, it's smooth.

amazingly so. I spent FOREVER hunting for a good gem refrence/tutorial and yours was both and excellent.
