Description
I wrote a poem called "Curvy Compass" and I've been fighting with my sketchbook on how to illustrate it. Here is the poem:"You run,
But I don't follow.
I simply walk in the other direction.
You need your time, and I need my time,
We're just indecisive of all our selections.
And don't you know that no matter what,
I will always be happy?
I don't care,
Because I never get worried.
You can run, you can run, you can run,
Just keep on running...
...Away from me.
I'm a monster now,
I have a drooling mouth.
I clutch a curvy compass in my claws.
But you run just the same,
I see you fading away.
Yet a smile still slowly crawls across my fuzzy face.
And don't you know that no matter what,
I will never be worried?
'Cause the more west you'll go the less east you'll be.
Run away! Run away! You just gotta keep on running...
...back to me."
*****
I doodled this little guy at a coffee shop, then colored the bulk of it during a LiveStream session. I finished up some tweaks and a lot of toying with colors.
This piece is all vector and made in Adobe Illustrator CS5.
I hope you enjoy both the illustration and the poem

I really enjoy the concept of this one. All of your artwork seems to come straight from the heart!
You say you wrote the poem first, then based the drawing on it? I love both works, you are quite the poet! For me, it's a little hard seeing the connection between the two, the poem seems to have this little melancholic undertone that not evident in the picture. But that's just me... xD I should really stop rambling. I really like both pieces of art here, I hope to see you at a convention soon!

OH HEY! I appreciate the feedback and the two pieces probably require further explanation because you are right, the poem feels more melancholy. Even though the character is going through a depressing breakup, I wanted to convey that this character, is oblivious, care-free, and convivial. In the poem there are the lines "I will always be happy, I will never get worried." In life we have the choice of letting ourselves get down or we can do our best to be optimistic no matter what.
Unfortunately this character might be too Optimistic as he thinks his lost lover may return.
The monster suit is symbolic to how one person may create these delusions and reasons to no longer like someone anymore, as well as for that final argument you may have when breaking up and all the bottled up aggression comes out, making one sound worse than he/she really is.
The compass is another symbol for his delusional optimistic nature. I know sometimes when a relationship ends it may feel like you are lost and/or missing. But this character knows exactly where he is going because he has direction. Another reason to not get worried
Hopefully this helps clear up some lose ends and ties the poem to the piece a bit better. I struggled quite a bit when creating the artwork, took at least month if not 2 or 3. I actually started coloring a different version where the character is this huge monster instead of a boy wearing a monster suit. I didn't like where it was going so I scrapped it haha!
Hows your summer going? What conventions do you plan on getting too? Hope to see you soon!

Wow, thanks for the explanation! That's great, I understand it more now. I think it is the fact that all you can see and understand just by looking at the picture is pure optimism. I still have to say that you did a fantastic job on both of 'em. xD
My summer is going great... 3 weeks until my first year of college starts! I'm looking at going to the one in Chicago next week, and I would like to go to Geek Kon again. One that I'm for sure going to later in the year is ACEN, I can't miss it this time!! What are your plans?

AWESOME!!! I'll be at Anime World Chicago and Geek.kon so hopefully I'll see you at either or both! What college are you going too? Thats got to be exciting!
Thanks again! I know the piece and poem have symbolism that may not make sense without further explanation, I probably should have included it in the description.

Well, I'm really glad I got to see you @ Anime World Chicago, I started missing you. Thanks for the prints, one of which is this very lovely piece of artwork.
And no worries- If I was the only one that caught that it shouldn't really matter...

Story time~ Again!
I thought I'd stop in and watch you work on this for a bit and I rather enjoyed the music you had playing. I could barely hear it though so, silly me, turned the volume up real loud. That was all fine and dandy for a bit until you said something and it was really, super loud. Totally scared me half to death but I was too stubborn to turn the volume down. "Can't scare me again," I thought, "I know what to expect now."
... and then a little while later you said something, totally startled me and before I could turn down the volume you said something else. My ears totally hated me but it was really rather amusing and this is totally adorable so they'll just have to get over it.

OH NO!!! I'm so sorry! I wish I knew, I could have adjusted the settings. I don't have a good way of testing the audio yet. Usually I have to trial and error with the settings either with another person or on a second computer, but I will work on it so I don't destroy anyone's ears next time
I appreciate you stopping by, *highfive*
Are you attending Anime Iowa next weekend?

Awwww... Don't feel bad~! I promise it was actually pretty funny. You totally would have laughed if you had been here to see it.
No, I'm afraid I have to pass on Anime Iowa. I thought about going but the friends I would have gone with seemed to have stopped going to cons and I'm not too big on going to cons alone. That and I really didn't want to pay for a hotel room on my own.

Aw bummer, Completely understandable though...cons are expensive and definitely more enjoyable with a cool group of friends.
I'm pumped for AI cause a bunch of my art friends will be there. I can chill out with them instead of getting my butt kicked by random 8-year olds in Smash Bros... *shake fist*

You say that like getting your butt kicked by random eight year old kids in Smash Bros is a bad thing. haha. Maybe I'm crazy but I think that'd be pretty fun to see~

You're right it was a good time. The kid totally trolled me, I'm horrible at SmashBros to begin with... it was pretty funny though.
