I was VERY dissapointed by this ending. This finale was incredibly disappointing, and contradictory. Grogar being Discord was an incredibly messed-up and disgusting idea for a twist that objectively never should have happened, and definitely shows how rubbish the writers are getting at arcs and that they don't care in the slightest how many characters they completely abuse. Discord seems to be their favorite subject, and I hate how this episode makes the entire Season 9 just pure smoke and mirrors for something that was never so. Plus, the thing with him causing trouble to test the Mane 6 is SO FREAKING OLD!! He's done that many times, when it was and wasn't appropriate, and to have Season 9's arc reduced to that was just so rubbish. As unsatisfying as Grogar was, at least the Legion of Doom was a really original plot, because we've never had villains be smart enough to realize that teamwork is powerful, and Grogar intending to use the Mane 6's own success strategy (teamwork) against them. That actually made a pretty good season arc. Then they revealed the whole dramatic arc to be one of Discord's stupid fake Season-4-level friendship tests, which he's supposed to have outgrown more than half the series ago, and everything just gets cancelled out. It's SO dumb and wasteful, not to mention OOC and flippin' boring! And I'm furious that they didn't reform Cozy Glow. Not that I wanted Chrysalis and Tirek to reform, but after all the friendship epiphanies they had, and how much they warmed up to teamwork, and we got to see their side of the story throughout Season 9, to have them be the main final villains and turn them all to stone at the end was just pitiful. A few parts of the episode were kind of entertaining, but that's it.

They crossed the line big time. Sometimes I wish I had never decided to take a look at that first episode. But then I can't help but ponder who I'd have become if I had never taken a look? I became a much friendlier person, and the show even helped me come out of the closet as a transgender lesbian. And how am I rewarded in the end? By having one of the most important laws of morality broken. That's something I'd expect from crap like Elfen Lied or Akame Ga Kill, both of which tried justifying child murder.

Well.. Cozy Glow is not exactly dead.
Though being turned to stone is still sort of a fate worse than death even if the statued is conscious or not.

So yeah.. I am mixed on the statue bit.
Especially Chrysalis's case for me(yeah, Cozy Glow's case is sure going to cause a debate thing in the fandom.)

Okay here I go, just a Crazy or not that Crazy idea I had seeing this whole situation about Discord, and his "TEST" to boost her Confidence.

Here we go:

Discord, The Most Well Successful Villain of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

"Keep friends close, and enemies closer." It's a proverb well known around the world, and Discord followed it by the letter, since his first appearance in Season 2:

Many had interpreted his moves towards Celestia as a move of someone in love or something, but real deal is, he was trying to convince her, that his ways, were good, and she wasn’t taking advantage of her full power, yes, he was trying to corrupt her as he did with the 6 ponies.

Before his defeat he had accomplished his plan, in Season 3, Celestia brings his statue saying that "-His powers might have some importance in the Future", which means, he did convinced her that he was important, he ensured that he wouldn’t be defeated, in case something out of his plan happened, Celestia was his backup plan.

In the same Episode, he knew he couldn’t fool the entire Elements, and the princesses, but, he could fool one of them, one that had showed pity to him, and this one, is well loved and respected by the other 5, Fluttershy, taking advantaged of her Kindness, so he played along, he undone his deeds turning the animals back to normal and devoting his powers to help them in any case they need.

but...

It was not shown in any situation of the show, he didn’t fight Tirek ( he allied with him, but Tirek plans didn’t align with his, so he couldn’t count on Tirek), mocked Twilight when she was seeing the past, making a Scepter of her face, and he even denied help saying that he couldn’t undo what He did with the Tree of Harmony, I mean he's so powerful that he can bring villains all together taking them out of Tartarus and even bringing them from the Dead, that was the case of King Sombra, so what is some branches for him?
The only time he helped was because Fluttershy was in danger, he had to protect his cover.

About Discord reformation:

Meghan McCarthy said: "I don't think I'd want to reform all of our villains. I don't think that would be realistic. No matter how hard you try, some people (or evil alicorns) just aren't going to change their ways. But for a character like Discord, 'reforming' him allows us to tell more stories with his character. He gets to be the not-always-reliable ally instead of the known enemy."

Jim Miller was asked, "Can we just replace Spike/Rarity subplot with Discord/Fluttershy now that he is fully reformed?", and replied, "IS he fully reformed? "

IDW comics writer Jeremy Whitley was told, "I liked that finally, some writer noticed the most obvious thing like Fluttershy having Discord, the demigod at her disposal.", and replied, "I like that with Discord the excuse doesn't even have o make sense. He can just not feel like helping."

So... not feel like to helping, not fully reformed, not always reliable ally. Too many Not's.

So I think he was planning to scratch them out of the game for sure, perhaps he would spare Fluttershy, or control her mind, as he did with all of them when he was using his power of Chaos on Season 2 Episode 1 and 2. He did gathered all those villains to destroy them, the Wretched Bell gives the power you wish to have, so why would he wanted that? possibly for some evil purpose, but again, things got out of hand, like Tirek, the team he gathered turned against him, so he had to invent an excuse, "Wanted to Boost your confidence"... he was caught, and they forgave him cuz he was where he wanted, close enough to not make them see the whole picture, blinded by love perhaps, they grew found of him.

He helped to defeat the Trio, and I Don’t Know if anyone notice, he kept the Bell, he gave power back to them, and the Bell... well... is with him.

So in one act, he Got what he wanted, took revenge of those who betrayed him, yes, even cursing a filly to live inside in stone form for gods knows how many years forward, and nobody noticed, perfect!

He played as friend, gained their thrust, gained their hearts, blinded them, used them to fulfill his plans.

Equestria is in the hooves of a Unsecured Princess who is very needy of her friends, can’t do anything without them, scratched Luna and Celestia out of the game, and so, he can outlive those 5, leaving only Twilight to face at the end, defeated by the grieve of losses she had, the not that young 6 scattered, he uses the Bell, defeats Twilight, and his Eternal Rule of Chaos begins, he only had to wait.

Well done Discord, you made it, you son of a B****!

So that's the Idea I had, am I alone on these line of thought?

Honestly I feel like regardless of his intentions, his plan would hurt the others' trust in him.
As in they might have a lingering doubt of "How do we know he won't pull something like this again. How do we know he won't do something behind our backs that would cause something again?"

As for his plan to boost Twilight's confidence, I can't stop imagining it ironically demolished what remaining confidence Celestia and Luna had in themselves due to how things went for them in this finale. Yes, they sort of helped but ultimately they get shafted in a way in the end.

My main gripe with this two-parter is the final battle could've been presented on a much grander scale. The one we got feels a tad anti-climatic, but that might be because I haven't watched a majority of the show as of yet.

Anon200 [2019-10-13 12:17:02 +0000 UTC]

I won't say it was entirely a curve ball, because they actually did allude to it being Discord briefly in "The Summer Sun Setback". Also, he did do a bit more than simply said "I'm sorry" this time as he did trick the villains into setting Starlight loose. I dunno...I think I've been "numb" to characters being forgiven very easily ever since "The Cutie Re-Mark". (I stewed about that one for all of Season Six...)

The thing I disliked about the episode is that even in the series finale we once again had to have a bit of Twilight's standard "woe is me, everything's gone wrong, I can't think of any way to save Equestria, none of the multiple times I've been in this same situation matter, and we're all doomed", and she can't do anything until the rest of the Mane Six give her a standard confidence boost/pep talk. They even had that line where Pinkie had to remind her that's what ALWAYS happens. Other gripes is that the Pillars of Old Equestria did downright pathetic. At least Starlight gave Chrysalis a run for her money, even empowered. And, to no one's surprise, Celestia and Luna get one-shotted...again.

(Aside from that, my other disappointment was that they went to all the trouble of animating Tempest Shadow to pretty much decorate the background. I kind of figured that'd be the case, but if so they were missing most of the other characters from the film too.)

That being said, I really compliment that the two-parter was pretty much non-stop action and tension the whole way through. I don't think the show's been this violent and exciting in a long time. And honestly...what really rammed this episode home for me was that they broke tradition again and had the three villains NOT get a redemption. I actually find that enhances their prestige a bit in this case since it looked like they nearly "came to the light" earlier this season. Like in Chrysalis' case, even though she got the offer way back in season six to no longer need to be starving all the time if she'd let go of her pride, she ended up choosing to be a hate-filled monster to the end who'd rather be miserable and alone forever than give it up. I also didn't think they'd have the guts to inflict a permanent punishment on a child character, even if she was horrid, but nope...she's stone for all eternity along with the other two.

Same for Chrysalis, I am disappointed about her being statued and Discord's iffy plan too.

At least Spike didn't get shafted though..

It felt as if the decision was made really late into the season to have Grogar be Discord in disguise. It genuinely felt like the writing in earlier episodes was setting him up to be a formidable villain.

Totally agree with your review. That "twist" in the beginning really surprised and disappointment me. I really wanted to see the wrath of what Grogar could unleash. I don't even understand the reason as to why such a choice was made--it seemed so...last minute? Nevertheless, what a amazing way to end off the finale. Kept me on the edge of my seat, despite having a feeling I knew how it would end.

Do you think because they use multiple writers the intention was originally to have Grogar be, well, Grogar? And then some bright spark near the end changed the plans last minute?

spd243 In reply to Cuddlepug [2019-10-15 17:34:20 +0000 UTC]

Probably. That may be the case because Grogar seemed so fleshed out in the beginning of the season. it really did seem like a last minute change.

I think another issue that should have been pointed out is this...

WHY was Cozy Glow evil???  What was her motivation?  Why did she do what she did?  Shitty home life?  Abusive parents?  Sociopath?  Sheer boredom?

We won't ever know because holy shit, they turned the three villains into stone statues.  I think it's awful rich that Discord got away punishment free, despite reviving King Sombra, freeing the other villains, nearly causing the end of Equestria, and causing the death of the Tree of Harmony along with the Elements.  Why wasn't HE punished in some form or another?  It's also kind of fucked up that Discord helped turn the three villains into stone because he stated at the beginning of season 2, "At least I don't turn ponies into stone!" Does a justice system not exist in Equestria?  Why are they allowed to turn young children into statues, which are implied to still be aware of everything around them?

It was a great finale, but goddamn, the writing for Cozy Glow was atrocious.  I also really fucking hated that Grogar, a fan favorite that was requested for for quite some time, turned out to be a red herring.

I agree with your rating.

MLP S09E24-25 Quick ThoughtsPlease note that due to time restrictions I watched this two-parter two days before its actual U.S. premiere. However, since i'm not a spoiler soldier - fuck them, btw - I scheduled this review right before publishing the review of the very last MLP episode.
Holy Mother of Celestia, I'm still in shock...
Truth be told, I knew that by building up the Evil Trio shit's gonna happened - and oh boy, shit did happen. A lot of shit actually.
Man, this was quite an epic two-parter. In fact, I consider this the best two-parter of the whole series - but only after Twilight's Kingdom. (That epicness cannot be topped.) The Evil Trio -whose ultimate forms were pretty awesome - was probably the best idea from the writers since the appearance of Tirek back in season 4. The episode cleverly reflected on the negative effects of the fake-news phenomenon, proving again that you don't need to put it much effort to find the gullible and then

You pointed out perfectly what has been the greatest issue of this otherwise epic two-parter. The Grogariscord twist is beyond idiotic and the fact that he is forgiven in the end by everypony - including Fluttershy, who should be furious - is insulting as hell.

This is the only reason I gave it a 'B+', because in every other aspect this last two-parter was terrific.
