A mucguffin is an object or device in a movie or a book that merely as a trigger for the plot, there are two franchises that I came across that utilized this concept, The secret of NIMH and Transformers.
The Amulet also referred as the stone, came from an unknown origin, it was passed on to Nicodemus the former leader of the rats after Jonathan, the husbond of Mrs. Brisby, passed away due to an attack from Dragon the Fitzgibbons farm cat, Nicodemus show Mrs. Brisby a vision of the past when the rats used to be normal until they were kidnapped by the scientist of the national institute of mental health also known by the rats, as NIMH, where they were enjected with a serum that makes them more intelligent and live longer, the rats were able to escape from NIMH thanks to the help of NIMH, before Jonathan's death, he requested to Nicodemus to give the stone to Mrs. Brisby for good luck, when Jenner caught wind of Elizabeth in possession of the stone, he came up with a plan to eliminate Nicodemus once and for all, the rats of NIMH helped out Mrs. Brisby by moving her house to a different location, due to her son Timmy was sick with pneumonia,
Jenner saw his chance to sabotage the moving plan by cutting one of the ropes holding the cinderblock house, causing the house fall on to Nicodemus, killing him in the process, When Justin found out that Jenner muredered Nicodemus and attacking Mrs. Brisby, he can no longer tolerate Jenner's behavior and came after him with a sword, Sullivan who was once Jenner's accomplice,decided to stand up against Jenner and helped Justin by throing a dager towards Jenner's back and killed him.

The house began to sink into the muddy pool taking Mrs. Brisby's children, Teresa, Cynthia, Martin and Timmy, as well as their babysitter, Auntie Shrew down with them, Mrs. Brisby attempted to save them but it was too late for her as the house sank into mud and lost the stone when dropped it in the pool, all hope seemed lost until something unthinkable happened, the stone flown out of the pool, floated around Mrs. Brisby, she saw this face of Nicodemus within the stone and used it's power to save her children and Auntie Shrew, after the ordeal She gave the stone to Justin so him and the rats of NIMH can be ensured for their safety when ever they need to use it, Justin became the new leader of rats while Mrs. Brisby and her family stayed behind.
Before Optimus Prime passed away on his death bed, he told Ultra Magnus a prophecy about an autobot rising from the ranks, to light the darkest hour, he gives the matrix of leadership to ultra magnus seconds before he passed away, Megatron and his team of damaged deceptions were floating through space after his battle with Optimus and the autobots, ended up in space because Starscream ordered the uninjured deceptions to dump the decepticons into outer space leaving Starscream to dispose Megatron with the others, until they came across Unicron the mechanical planet eating monster.
Unicron Megatron that the matrix of leadership need to be destroyed because it was only thing that stands in his way, he offers a deal with Megatron a new body and new troops to command, but when Megatron refuses his offer, Unicron threatened Megaton if he doesn't go after the matrix, he will make him parish into oblivion, which Megatron accecpts resulting Unicron giving him a new body and new name, Galvatron, Galvatron had stolen the matrix from Ultra Magnus after he and his new troops murdered him before the junkions on planet junkion brought him back to life, Galvatron tries to open the matrix against Unicron but it wouldn't open, Unicron transforms from his planet mode to his giant robot mode and came after Cybertron, wanting to destroy the planet.
Shockwave who was one of megatron's loyal soldiers was so horrified by Unicron's behavior towards cybertron, he ordered the decepticons to fight off Uncron, this resulted some of the decepticons being killed by Unicron and retreated away from cybertron, Galvatron attampted to help the decepticons but got eaten alive by Unicron in one piece, Hotrod went after unicron in order bring the matrix back to its right hands, he found Galvatron and engaged him in a one on one fight, when hotrod got his hands on the matrix, it activated the power within object and transformed him into a new autobot leader, Optimus who was in the matrix gave Hotrod a new name, Rodimus Prime, Rodimus threw Galvatron from Unicron to outer space and use the power to defeat Unicron once and for all.
When Rodimus learned that not only the decepticons have survived the battle with Unicron but also teamed up with the Quintessions who he meet them along with kup on a phoney trial before the Wheelie and the Dinobots came to the rescue on their way to Junkion, wanting to find more answers, he went inside the matrix to find out, while he was inside he found out that the Quintessions were the creators of both the autobots and decepticons, he also found out that Sentinel Prime who was one of the previous autobot leaders, had the matrix given from him to Alpha-Trion before giving it to Orion Pax, who was now Optimus Prime.
Mrs Brisby: You Can Unlock any door, if you only have the key.
Nicodemus: Courage from the heart is very rare.

Optimus: Until that day, till all are one.
