If any hold the secrets of the universe, they are the Volsha.

On nearly every inhabitable planet, at least one species has evolved to become the dominant intelligent life. This is also true for planet Vegara, home to a sentient tree race. As each tend to have the lifespans of thousands of years, they are a patient species and have never known war. The Galactic Federation for Peace welcomed the Volsha in immediately upon discovering that they are walking life support systems. One produces enough oxygen through photosynthesis to support an entire vessel with a crew of hundreds. As one is kept on each ship, by galactic decree, an act of killing a Volsha brings the charges of attempted mass murder and attempted suicide. Given free run of the Terrarium centers of spacecrafts, Volsha feed a few times a day by nestling their toes in nutrient-rich soil and absorbing LED lighting. Having a conversation with this species is similar to talking to an ancient Greek philosopher or old Swami. Because of their insanely long lives, these sentient trees possess wisdom and an incredible tolerance of even the most annoying species. Often times, their counsel is sought for any variety of problem solving solutions.
