Character: Spike & Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Construction Notes:
OH MLP. This show swept through my circle of friends in a matter of days and, despite trying to avoid its rampant cuteness, I eventually ended up watching it over the summer. As a somewhat naive bookworm, myself, I really felt attached to Twilight's character and enjoyed seeing her grow through the series. I pulled this costume together for Otakon in a matter of about 8 hours, then promptly corralled my TX buddies into cosplaying from it for AFest. I was so happy when my friend Lily agreed to make Spike! <3 The wig began as a nondescript dark blue/black mix which I sewed pink and purple extensions into, then cut and styled. I'm still tweaking the wig a bit to frame my face better, since it always looks a little bit wonky pulled over my shoulder. (But I knew from the get-go I wanted to wear it over my shoulder, since that's how Twilight Sparkle's mane is always drawn.) The horns and ears are modified from a pair that I purchased from the lovely Yaya Han. The sweater vest was the luckiest find in the world, procured from -- of all places -- the little boys' section at a Burlington Coat Factory. There is a "cutie mark" badge pinned to the front of the vest (unfortunately obscured by the book) that matches my hair barrette. Both were made from plastic sheeting, painted, and lacquered. The pleated skirt was sewn from navy blue bottomweight. The book, which was the most time-consuming portion of the costume, is modeled after the book shown in the opening sequence of the first episode. It was made from a hollowed-out home decor book and decorated with paint, craft foam, acrylic jewels, and lacquer. The silly thing keeps getting beat up in my luggage and I've already had to repair it more times than I can say, but it's super handy to stow my wristlet and badge inside while walking the con. All in all, I'm excited to continue adding to this costume and I'd like to wear it again at Katsucon. I'd also love to make Pinkie Pie someday, since I love how utterly bizarre she is, but I have a feeling I'd look a little too docile and stuffy, LOL.
