Description A doodle originally from my Africa trip that I only now managed to color.

This scene is actually based on a story I developed when I was in junior-high - named "the Valley of Cats"
Starred by a young mouse who accidentally got lost and found the valley inhabited by the terrible creatures he had only heard from fairy tales, the cats,
that eventually end up being rather different than he expected...

I used to be (and still am) a huge fan of Brian Jacques' Redwall-series that served as inspiration for this story, but I haven't really worked on it for ages
this is the first time I ever wrote or drew anything down...

But it was fun to do something different for a change :3

lol my official Halloween pics are not ready yet so this shall do, but nevertheless
Happy Halloween everyone!

Thank you took me a couple of days to sketch it out

Hello,

I'm from ,

this piece is so amazing! There are so many different objects and books to look at and you rendered out everything so nicely. Also you have an amazing understanding of lighting and shading!

The overall concept and the realization of the piece is very skilled. You really get a sense how it feels like being at that place although I don't even have any information about the story except this piece. So it really makes me want to know more about the story.
The cat (?) - like creature makes me also really curious. Only from this picture I would say he is as well curious as also intelligent and loves to spent hours and hours studying. Although he is a cat he seems to have a mouse as a friend which tells me he must be a special cat . I really love his frowning expression. Has it to do with the mouse?

There are only a few things that could be still improved I think.
First of all the floor tiles don't seem to go after the rules of perspective like the books do. Maybe the tiles nearer to the viewer should be more larger. Also somhow the pieces of paper look like they are floating on the ground. I think this could because the papers look very bright because of the light shining on them, but the tiles underneath are in shade.

Then I'm not sure about it but I think the perspective of the books is inconsitent at some spots. For example the right pile of books in the foreground compared to the left one. Did you construct vanishing points for this piece or just painted freely?

Also I think some elements in the piece look a bit flat. I think this could be because the outlines are very thick and black, also on spots where the light is shining on.

Lastly You could try to create more depth in your piece. In this particular piece you could add dust particles in the light of the candle which would make the background much more faded out. Like this there would be a clearer differentiation between foreground and background. Oh and I just realized the colors you used are all warm, so you could use some cool colors in the shady regions to create dynamic.

All in all this piece is amazing and my taste. You are a fantastic artist and regarding this is an older piece, you already know most of the points I addressed I guess. I can't wait to see future work and how it develops .

He's a hairless cat actually and they tend to look worried due to their wrinkly face, I personally see him more curious than worried as he's listening to the mouse - perhaps he's telling a story!

I pretty much drew this free hand - originally it was only to be the cat, the table and the mouse, but then I got excited and started adding stuff until I had the full background done.
This is an older piece and should I do it now I'd probably do better with the highlights and add some hues to the shades as well so that it's not all brown.

I find it incredibly hard to make expressive faces from the side, but you did a splendid job with the cat’s face. I wonder what emotion he’s feeling. The creases in his forehead tell me he’s distressed. Is the mouse telling him a story that’s sad or concerning? The warm, muted colors make the picture look like an illustration from a quaint old European fable, very classy. The wrinkles in the cat’s robe, the lighting and shadows, and even the bottle behind the wooden goblet look clean and professional. The clutter of books tells me a lot about the cat’s personality without knowing a thing about him. He’s obviously very studious, meticulous, and probably very obsessive in whatever field or fields he studies. My only suggestion would be adding some texture or some hint of a texture to the stone floor and walls. There are some custom brush tools out there that are good for that sort of thing.

I imagined he's a bit of a dreamy philosopher or maybe he's listening to the mouse's story and writing it down... who knows...
he's a hairless cat hence he's wrinkly as well...
Thank you for your insight! It was so nice to hear what you thought about the image ...

Very nice, I really like the lighting, and it feels kind of like one of the pictures you might find on the cover or maybe spine of a children's book, and as a lover of YA literature that is definitely a good thing.

BlackdragonVania [2019-02-02 20:29:48 +0000 UTC]

I like the feeling of the atmosphere, very charming and warm.
The drawing and the perspective are also well donde!
the only thing I recommend is to use a cool shadow in the background,
that would make a warm-cold contrast in your artwork making it even more better!
I put some examples that could help:

icreateworlds.net/2018/01/13/h…
It’s very important to create an atmosphere to send a message to the public, so to pick a right color scheme it’s only a matter of testing an playing . Have fun! The colors could transmit feelings and emotion for a better storytelling.
My  final tip It’s about the values, I recommend you to separate the composition in 3 value planes. You can do this checking your art on grayscale mode.
I attached you more samples:

Great artwork, I also love fantasy.😎

DragonOfTheMists [2018-06-15 00:05:39 +0000 UTC]

Ah, Redwall...  I received the first eighteen as a set for Christmas many years ago, and my love for the world Brian Jacques wove has yet to fade. I still keep my now-complete collection close at hand, and in perfect order... Except for having Mossflower before Redwall! Having been introduced to the world through the former (and not realizing for quite some time my mistake in assuming it was the first one), to do otherwise seems strange to me...

If you ever decide to return to The Valley of Cats, I think I would like to read it. It sounds like quite the intriguing little tale.

I got the Martin the warrior as a gift when I was nine and fell in love with it >u< Lucky me it's chronologically the first book and still my favorite.
After that I've collected most of them, yet sadly they didn't translate more than 10 into Finnish.

Heh I'm glad to hear that ... it's an old story and every now and then it comes back to me when I stumble upon some notes I did...
however the story itself is just tons of fractured little narratives here and there, without a proper red line yet...
Plus it would surely need a new name XD

I know right! I love those books to bits! My mom got me the 6th. book when I was at 3rd grade and I've loved them ever since!
I have all but one, yet it's so shame there won't be more ....

Excluding the last three... I've read every Redwall book at LEAST twice. To this day, my favorites are still Loamhedge, Mossflower, and Lord Brocktree. So well written And Loamhedge is the one book I've read more than ten times.

I know My heart broke when I heard the news.

I still have few of the latter ones that I haven't read - only the first 10 are translated in Finnish
and it much slower to read them in English...

I have to say I love Martin the Warrior the most - since it was my first
but Salamandastron, Taggerung and Mattimeo are close on top too!

Also have you read the Castaways of the Flying Dutchman series??
they are amazing too!

YES I have! I wished he had finished the series because it was written so well!
