I caught up.....bah...last page you've submitted thus far, please tell me there will be more...It would be an interesting twist of events if a brown caught zarinth instead of a bronze -hint hint- lol, either or, I like both of em

That would be true, but maybe I just made him a brown to suggest that something like that might happen? ^^

Race Courting is Awesome! Especially with it being dragons, at least in Pern stories the males don't fight each other for the girl, they have to catch her and use there skills to do so.

Now other dragon stories well they tend to make the guy fight for the girls and one ends up dead in the end.

cursed-sight In reply to Umura [2011-09-27 21:55:45 +0000 UTC]

This is true, though I do have a bit of violence in mine chase scene. I figure that the males get a little carried away considering how much they want to catch that Gold.

And thus begins the courting... if you can call that race a courting action...

Something like that happened at one of my first Shaula Weyr meetings, only we're set in 9th pass.

Next, on "As Pern Turns..."
Jaxom: "Sharra, I'm pregnant. And Ruth's the father."

MollyDollies [2011-09-26 15:15:41 +0000 UTC]

And they're off! Zarinth begins with a roar of challenge, a challenge quickly answered by the bronzes below. She rises and the pack is only a heartbeat behind her. Who will be the lucky dragon tonight, friends?
And remember, this mating flight is brought to you by: Bubbly Pies. 'Eat 'Em Hot!'

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Regardless... it is speculated in the books that a large enough brown could catch a queen. I refer to F'nor's brown who had plans to chase Brekke's queen. The idea was that a large brown could indeed have the stamina to catch a queen, but the resulting brood would be unlikely to be as big as a brown x Gold clutch and would not produce a queen egg.

^^ hope that helps; and sorry if it sounded stuck up... too many years of admining Pern sites

lol yeah I know, I was just checking if I remembered right, I thought maybe I had got it wrong and he was a bronze.

Fair enough. Still makes for an interesting 'twist'

Ira-Dracona In reply to dracona-fin [2011-09-26 07:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, in the Dragonlovers Guide to Pern it says the a clutch sired by a brown will produce no golds but the young will be healthy.

Browns caught golds much more when the first dragonriders were around because the dragons were much smaller and their sizes were closer together, whereas by the 9th Pass only a very large brown would be able to achieve the feat of catching a gold.

dracona-fin In reply to Ira-Dracona [2011-09-26 10:59:46 +0000 UTC]

*nod* I must admit I can't remeber exactly where in the DLG; but I'll look it up... the ultimate admin tool is on my shelf I love it. I just remember the refferences from the books more.

In first pass browns would have held a good chance. Might have even been preffered if the young were heathier. At least for some queens ^^ Personal perference and all that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ira-Dracona In reply to dracona-fin [2011-09-26 18:39:07 +0000 UTC]

I can't remember which section it's in, either. I think it might be somewhere under Mating Flights.

I think they're just as healthy when sired by a bronze, but not producing a queen isn't too big a worry. If a queen laid a gold in every clutch the whole of Pern would have far too many dragons. More dragons is good when Thread's about, but they've all got to be fed somehow.

XD

Lol; prolly sounds like a good place to start

AHHAHAHHHAA, so true. And it happens so often in fan Weyrs... gold here, gold there to make people happy. and then everyone disappears

Ira-Dracona In reply to dracona-fin [2011-11-02 07:34:51 +0000 UTC]

The one I'm on is pretty active. We have three queens and only one rises every three real life months, so we're not inundated with hatchings every five seconds.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

dracona-fin In reply to Ira-Dracona [2011-11-02 08:42:42 +0000 UTC]

The one I run took a dive after one of my co-admins left... I had to kill two queens... we have one left but her player is a bit come and go... and the Weyrling queen no one has seen in months. We're one to one time... so we only have hatchinngs every 3-4 months. oh well life happens and as long as it's fun it doesn't matter

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ira-Dracona In reply to dracona-fin [2011-11-02 16:57:00 +0000 UTC]

We're lucky that the two admins have two of the queens, the senior and a junior, and the other junior belongs to a member who's very active unless she's really ill or something. And the senior admin keeps track of it all.

One day real life is about three in character for us, so the hatchings are approximately once per Turn in character. It gives time for the admins to keep an eye on the Candidates and match a dragon's personalities to them and see who deserves what colour.

cursed-sight In reply to KitWolfren [2011-09-26 14:48:38 +0000 UTC]

I know...maybe a bit too curvy considering how short I've been drawing their necks...oh well...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KitWolfren In reply to cursed-sight [2011-09-26 17:01:34 +0000 UTC]

Seeing as some of the cover art made them look like flying T-Rex's... you're doing great
It's not too curvy, after all they have to be able to bend and get the thread, and accept firestone from their rider, so even the golds would have the same range of movement.

Yeah, Michael Whelan was definitely the best Pern artist. I've based all of my stuff off of this designs. The White Dragon was the first one I read, so that image always stuck in my mind. My favourite cover though is All the Weyrs of Pern.

I agree with you on that. I also like The Dolphins of Pern cover. Though one of my favorite is The Skies of Pern. I just loved that image of the dragon.
