Description
Basic details about the latest version of the successfull model 175.In this version, I conceived an engine based in the free-piston, gas generator plus turbine principle. The powerplant has three units of the gas generator with opposed-piston architecture, working in the two-stroke Diesel cycle. The energetic but not too hot exhaust gases are ducted to a centrally located gas turbine. The turbine shaft drives the pusher propeller through a reduction gearbox. The other side of the shaft moves a simple mechanical air compressor of little compression ratio.
Economical cruise can be performed with only one of the gas generator unit working.
Launching is equally performed with a steam catapult, and the descend by parachute on water, so no landing gear is needed.

Next, you need to set up a way for a ship to recover it without slowing down too much (something the World's navies worked on for decades with little success).

So you need a second, heavy lift, aircraft to deploy this? Not the best use of resources, not to mention hangar/deck space.Β (I know, reality sucks at times...)

And, like in the real world, to sustain an Γ©lite of fighter pilots fighting, all expenses are justified, even cheap ships equiped with cheap cargo helicopters.Β
Remember the air opperations in the last seven decades's wars: no price is higher enough to maintain the fighter-bomber boys fighting.

Cheap ships are often slow and quite fragile, but, a ship able to keep up with the task force and defend itself will not be cheap.
As an alternative, the British did try out jets without an undercarriage landing on a rubber flight deck. www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&β¦
The main issue there would be the propeller, though it could be locked into a position where it clears. (If you hadn't guessed, I am a naval history buff.)

This is from the same universe as your super ships, right?

On water with big inflatable balls to stay on the surface, to be recovered later.
