And here’s the second alien race, the Arrhegts, designed in response to Earthsong9405 ’s Space AU: Design an Alien contest . Like I said for the first design, this isn’t really a true entry, but more for the fun of the prompt.

The Arrhegts (pronounced Ar-het) are a relatively small race mammalian in nature that were once enslaved by the Setarri like many other races. Their size combined with a natural inventiveness and flexibility made them very useful to the Setarri, if troublesome. This eventually backfired in the form of a revolt by the enslaved race that ended up highly destructive for both parties involved (with the Setarri disappearing right around the end of the conflict). The residual technology and information left behind fascinated the Arrhegts, who spent the following centuries slowly working to reverse-engineer the ruins.

Physically the Arrhegt are very flexible and mobile, despite their puffier appearance. The thick fur helps insulate against the freezing cold air that blows through their native jungles, while their ear-like appendages can aid in the release of excess body heat. Their hands and feet are both capable of drastic rotations which, combined with a tail with dermal ridges, allows incredibly flexible grips on branches, ledges, pipes, and so on. In the past quadrupedal motion was preferred, but over time they came to prefer bipedal stances.

Most individuals are deep pink with blue iridescent markings and rectangular-slitted irises. A small organ on their forehead is capable of detecting bioelectric pulses, though this is more for predator evasion than hunting given that their herbivories. Voracious eaters too! Their four-way-splitting jaws allow for a bigger mouthful per bite while also serving as a useful intimidation tactic.

In intergalactic travels, the Arrhegt are widely known as engineers. By the time of their discovery they had already made considerable process in deciphering the ancient technology, and they took to space travel like fish to water. The newly available resources only served to accelerate their research and development, quickly launching them into a new age of self-enhancements and technological engineering advances galaxy-wide. Pre-discovery, various levels of medical alterations such as implants and prosthetics were already regular practice but partner research with the Vaiu catapulted this field. As for the Setarri ruins, they are the leading base of research on the tech (though they’ve still barely scratched the surface).

Working with the Arrhegt, they typically take on more engineering positions- typically as engineers working on improved tech designs or as maintenance onboard a ship in travel. It’s not uncommon to find them in a wide range of stations and locations however, as they have an insatiable desire to learn. If you are able to earn one’s loyalty, it’s a bond that lasts for life.

Facts about the Arrhegt:

-They seriously love to eat. Ships experienced with Arrhegt individuals commonly stock up on excess fruit, which is written off as a legitimate business expense.

-While opening their mouths is natural, Arrhegts will only open the lower jaw in the presence of other species as they’ve found that the split jaw makes many other species uncomfortable.

-Many Arrhegts end up with one pet partner that they bond with forever. If something happens to this partner, it is considered a loss of family by other Arrhegts.

-It’s not uncommon for these partner pets to be dangerous beasts, much to the shock and horror of other species. Nobody knows how they do it.

-There was once a rumor spread that Arrhegts were able to tame beasts because ‘their third eye could steal your soul’. The Arrhegts in that district, of course, found this hysterical and played it up so hard.

-A lot of the modern Arrhegt writing system can be traced back to Setarri writing glyphs. They were illiterate during enslavement, but figured out the the concept by observing their captors.

-They are a very expressive species, using ears, feathers, eyes, mouth and hands to express themselves. Expressive traits are surprisingly universal.
