Description
Alrighty, so today I’ve got us some fresh new aliens to behold! These were designed based off the prompt provided by Earthsong9405 in her more recent AU Contest: Design an Alien , though they aren’t really ‘entries’ per say. One of my entries was chosen in the last contest so I want to step back this round, and just did these designs for the fun of it. I really hope you don’t mind, Earthsong!
With all that being said, it’s time for alien description!
These guys don’t so much have a name for themselves, but the galaxy has taken to calling them Krikin, after the clicking sounds they use to communicate. Almost insect-like in appearance, most of these guys’ bodies are covered in hard scutes and plates that help protect them from the sharp stone and burning rains native to their planet. In addition, the Krikin are able to see a vastly wider spectrum of light and color than most other alien species. They are omnivorous out of necessity- due to the weather patterns of their planet causing intermittent acid rain storms, food is scarce. They gather as much food as possible from the surface before hunkering down deep underground for the months it takes for a storm to pass. Luckily, the soil filters the falling precipitation so they can access clean underground springs in the meantime.
When the Setarri first enslaved them so long ago, the Krikin had been aboveground wanderers. However due to the Setarri’s desire for unique minerals deep in the crust, the Kriken were forced to mine for them. Because of this drastic change of lifestyle, several physiological changes have occurred to their species via evolution; the biggest change was a loss of the protective case that used to act as a natural umbrella for their bodies (now a vestigial 'wing' remains), other changes include their front limbs becoming more suited for digging than hunting (not that that stops them) and their lower abdomen softening.
One of the most unique aspects of their culture is their wide-spectrum eyesight combined with their natural silk-making abilities. Decorating themselves, their homes, and the very walls of the caves they live in with beautifully colorful sheets, flags, rugs, etc, Krikin live very vibrant lives despite the confines they live in. Within their patterns are hidden mosaics and bands only visible to them and a few other species that convey elaborate stories and emotions, though the normal visible spectrum is still enough to bask in the beauty of their handiwork. Needless to say, Kriken silkwork sells fantastically on the market. Their silk has many other uses as well, such as construction, hunting and food storage.
In intergalactic contexts, the Kriken are not physically all that strong, but are excellent at strategizing and giving/taking clear orders (as they are used to hunting in packs). They make excellent supports, and are very flexible when it comes to situations changing on the fly. However, they do struggle with complex and non-literal concepts, so care does need to be taken when explaining things they have never seen or experienced.
Other facts about the Kriken:
-They lack the ability to speak verbally so any intergalactic-going Kriken have learned a universal morse-code that they click instead to communicate.
-Kriken identify themselves and each other by bands of color unique to each of them, similar to dna barcodes. Their planet also has its own pattern they refer to it by, making translation difficult. Some species jokingly call the planet RGB-U.
-There are three genders: One ‘male’ and two ‘female’. The male is generally slightly larger and without a frill, while the females have head frills. The second female has an extra set of spinnerets and are usually dedicated to silk-crafting (a very highly respected position if done well)
-Something akin to pheromones are used to communicate among Krikin as well, however it is so in-depth and specialized for their species it is currently untranslatable.
-On their own they aren’t as dangerous, but a squad of them is a whole different story. You can’t predict them, and they are fast.
-Colonies are very rooted in family and ancestry due to their closed-in nature. They are friendly with foreign colonies however. Since space-faring discovery, some colonies are using learned technologies and assistance to construct permanent outdoor living areas safe from the storms.
-it’s rare to see an undecorated ship with a Krikin on board. Even crew pets will suddenly appear down the hall with cute little sweaters on.
