this could be a friggin' caption contest photo.this ... is an outtake. yes.
made in the most contrasting of shoots ... a band photo.
i made one photo like this. the rest of of the band. all two of them.
although i liked what i saw on the monitor of the camera, when i got home and saw the detail that i wanted on the fingerprint ... i was happy.
contrasting what went on over the weekend this shoot -- albeit guerilla-style with no permits in the streets and alley-ways of hollywood -- was a breathe of fresh albeit smoke-tinged air.
i like this photo.
i like that it was completely unexpected and made during a shoot with a wholly different purpose.
and i thought i was getting home early tonight.
maybe tomorrow...
canon eos1dm2. 24-70/2.8L (go to lens). f/9. 1/5 sec. hand-fucking-held. hensel porty with bi-tube head - 2400 ws. chimera super pro plus large softbox 54x72 inches (silver interior with light baffle) frame right about 10 feet from subject's hand. bogen super boom. matthews stands. assistant. a bit of levels. convert to b/w via channel mixing. a bit of contrast. a bit of unsharp mask.
YES, THE CANON EOS 1D MARK 2 IS DIGITAL. THIS WAS NOT SHOT ON ILFORD.

Sometimes, that's how it happens... so inci(aci)dentally. But there's nothing wrong with happy accidents... sometimes they come out just fine. It looks a wee bit dark (I know it's supposed to be dark... I'm thinking too dark... so it's prolly my monitor)... I might have pulled it into photoshop and notched the contrast up a bit, bring out the highlights, especially on the barded wire, which, at least for me, looks a little muddy), depending on the mood you wanted to portray. But that's me.

I really like the way that only certain parts of the person's hand are picked out by the light with the rest engulfed in black. The details in the fingerprints and palmprints are really good, enhanced but the use of the unsharp mask. The details in the barbed wire are nice too, lit in an even more subtle way than the hand. It's sort of disturbingly hard to see against the darkness.

1/5sec and hand-fucking-held, and done like a true master I must add. Truly inspirfuckinational mate. I need at least 3 whiskys and a wall to lean against to keep steady at 1/15sec.

I do love the darkness of the shot, very secretive, i get a feeling that were not all told the "truth" in the photo, like something this going on behind the action. Simple, but done many a time.
