Description
Been thinking about spacecraft interiors.Located deep within the armoured heart of the ship, this is the controlsphere of an Avari galaxy cruiser; a combined bridge and CIC. Kind of like the ships in Star Trek are meant to be-but i didn't want it to resemble a Trek bridge.
The constrolsphere features a holographic 3D spherical map/display in the centre, a 360 degree panoramic viewscreen around the perimeter, but also a large circular holoscreen on the 'ceiling' which faces the nose of the craft and the direction of forward thrust.
The controlstations, click here for detail fav.me/d5pxvyy
-the small concave circular structures when occupied each have their own omni-directional holographic display/controls. All of which are interlinked, so that everyone can see and talk to everyone else, and see each other's data on their stations.
They also serve as acceleration couches which can rotate 180 degrees.

Awesome design! Love the lighting and atmosphere! It's also amazingly practical; bring more spheres online during a manpower intensive scenario like combat, and power down some during non-labor intensive phases like cruising. It's also nice that the ship interior is oriented in such a way that the engines' acceleration also grants artificial gravity.

Oh thank you! I was attempting to bring some realism to my ship- yes, the idea was also many of these stations could be used as stations for controlling unmanned drone ships- either for exploration, or combat purposes, in a sort of Virtual Reality holographic bubble. Since this is the most protected part of the ship- it could also contain the entire ship's crew Β should the need arise; like a storm cellar
Now I am Star Trek fan, but the artificial gravity thing, Β is the one thing out of all the fantastic technologies, sometimes seems to me too far fetched to create realistically, other than the three known ways to create it. The ship's decks would be arranged like stacked on top of each other like a skyscraper too. Β

I agree. I am a fan of many sci-fi space series and movies (incl Star Trek TNG onwards, Star Wars and currently watching BSG and The Expanse) and I find it sad that most of the time, artificial gravity is generated by handwavium and that the effects of acceleration are completely ignored (ST likes to handwave this problem away with inertial dampeners but i don't buy it ). The only series I have watched where there is even the slightest realism in gravity and acceleration is 'The Expanse' where ships are built like skyscrapers and acceleration generated by the engines also grants artificial gravity. In the series, most ships do constant G transfers at <1G and shipwide artificial gravity is generated as a result; G-LOC becomes a problem when higher G maneuvers are required and the show solves this problem with a blood pressurization injection (not sure how well the body can cope with that IRL). Yeah, I sometimes get a little dismayed whenever i see a space /sci-fi show Β with some kind of handwavium gravity system- its a bit of a cop out. Truth is space travel is far far more difficult than many space shows portray. On a side thought, it does make me think- ships like in Star Trek, Star Wars SG1 etc that can actually create and manipulate gravity would make quite a formidable weapon - no reason why it couldn't be used for defence tooΒ Β
That clip is an excellent example, but i'd buy the notion of some medical breakthrough or drugs to help cope with the G force issue, than artificial gravity. Β Yes that would exactly what needs to happen, when the alert for hi-G manoeuvres, or of a main engine burn are called- everyone would be strapped in.Β

Really cool. I have to e honest that when I saw the thumbnail for this pic I thougth the hologram in the middle was the Death Star.

thanks. lol, 'that's no death star' no, it isn't, but now you mention it, i can see that it does resemble it at first glance.

A step even further would be neural links between the ship and its command crew... But this looks sufficiently advanced as well.

ah yes, i had thought of something like that. they do have a sort of neural linking with their atmospheric craft. since that there are times when they are in effect locked into acceleration couches when under a main engine burn, then all controls have to be done through neural/eye tracking tech control

With full neural link technology you could have the entire bridge crew laying on their acceleration couches as if in coma, but with their minds very, very busy in abstract virtual realities used to control the ship.
Dan Simmons had such a system for the Pax space fleet in his Hyperionverse. I think he called it "the tactical space" or something.

or like in the matrix or something, lol, i guess it could help solve the problem of getting bored-well at least inbetween the shear terror of space battle.

but that's just me and i didn't want to take it that far-but still an interesting idea nevetherless
