Yeah, this set was by far the sharpest images I have taken of dragonflies.  I know a lot more about macro since last dragonfly season

Thanks!

I just bought my macro lens recently and have just started to get the hang of it. Got any tutorials you'd recommend?

There are some tutorials on the web and in various books, but the best resource for me has been the True Macro Photography forum on Ugly Hedgehog:
www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.h…

They have some FAQs with some basic information but the people there are moderately helpful as well.  My first couple of posts got some snarky responses, but most of the members try to be helpful.

General tips:
1. Get a Flash/speedlite.  This half the battle.  Then you have to do crazy things to get the speedlight to look natural:
www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-1… pay particular attention to the last couple of pages of that thread.

2. REALLY high f/ ratio.  Depending on your crop factor and lens, f/8-f/22.  This is the other half. Above f/11 you tend to get some diffraction loss of sharpness but it is worth it to get greater depth of focus.  If I shoot my macro lens wide open at f/2.8 and at minimum focusing distance, then the depth of focus is like 0.3 mm.

3.  Use your lowest iso, 100 or 200.  Noise can cause more loss of sharpness than camera shake at these high magnifications.

Now I did initially do some work with a Pringles can snoot/diffuser for my popup flash if you want to try that before getting the full size flash, but it will make things so much easier for you

These are the most common dragonflies I have seen since moving to Miami but they have been gone for months, yesterday was the first day I saw them coat the grassy lawns around campus
