Thanks. A few things need to come together:
1. Most importantly, you'll need an evening when the sunset colors will be rich. Look for cloudy skies on a very humid evening.
2. Find a tree or huge shrub out by itself in a field
3. Wide-angle lens
4. Graduated neutral density filters or several exposures for later merging in HDR software
Then, showtime:
6. Place the camera as low to the ground as possible
7. Wait until shortly after sunset, when the colors are still rich but are just starting to fade
8. Attempt to meter so that the sky will be correctly exposed but also so that the ground in the frame will not be underexposed badly (assuming your highlights need to be metered for (digital/slides); for print film reverse the suggestion)
9. Take photo
10. Actually, take several, bracketing your exposures.
11. Get the hell out of the tall grass before ticks discover fresh blood.

haha I like the advise in number 10.
I'll have to try that sometime this summer. Plus with me moving out of state, I'll have a ton of new scenery to try out my photography on.
