ok . . . first my apologies for being a dumb ass. I was going to suggest that when you write a tutorial you should have a cleaner background so it's not so distracting. Then I realized your bg was actually the tutorial example.

I've always used levels to get similar results. I'll have to try using curves to see if I can improve my technique.

levels work too, curves just give you a bit more control
