Description
The blue background was a given. Not only is the current flag a seal on a blue background, as are most US state flags, the seal itself has plenty of blue in it. Liberty's blue dress, the blue globe and of course the sky and waters on the coat of arms. The white bars represent Liberty and Justice. I've once again taken a visual cue from the current flag in deciding these bars should be white as the banner that says 'excelsior' is also. The orange bar is a nod to the Dutch settlements in the state's history. Specifically Fort Nassau and Fort Orange.Original flag: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coat_of_…

Couldn't agree more. Sticking a seal on a blue background isn't equal to actually designing a flag! I hope more and more people in authority will realise this, then there will be an influx in cool new designs. Until then, we'll have to make due with our own ideas.

As a New York city resident I only can agree. The damn flag now breaks the general rule of 'too much stuff on it' and 'words on a damn flag'. Also, the five bars can also mean the boroughs!
