Description
The FN CAS, sometimes known as the BACAR (BAttle CARbine), is a compact, select-fire automatic carbine designed and manufactured by the long-running FN Herstal factory in Belgium, Earth, being one of the two primary subsidiaries of parent company Groupe Industriel Herstal S.A., alongside FN Zeebrugge.
It was originally introduced in 2103 as a heavy-hitting close-quarters automatic capable of delivering controllable armour-piercing firepower to defeat modern body armour plating at close range with its APDS ammunition, and has seen decent popularity since its introduction. The long recoil system makes for a stable, controllable rate of fire, and the muzzle device reduces the concussive effect and muzzle blast to acceptable levels for both the user and one's allies. The relatively low rate of fire (600 RPM) also enables the magazine to last longer.
The FN CAS would greatly influence the design of the later FN FAM assault rifle, which would then shortly after become known as the standard service weapon of Earth's armed forces under the SISW-92 designation.

The FN CAS is an ambidextrous, short-barrelled automatic rifle chambered for modern 7.62mm EMAW-S ammunition fed via helical magazines holding 36 rounds each. It utilizes a short-stroke gas piston in its operation and runs on a constant recoil system that allows for a smooth, clean recoil impulse. The original FN CAS has a muzzle device acting as a blast mitigator that can be replaced with a suppressor, and the gas system is adjustable to ensure proper reliable function. It has a non-reciprocating charging handle with a moving dust cover that shifts up and out of the way when the charging handle is pulled to the rear.
The exhibit shown above is the FN CAS in its original configuration with an assortment of older and modern ammunition also being showcased. The gun has been fitted with a Zebra Industries 32-A93 red dot sight.
