Description Inspired by Shoomlah's series, shoomlah.deviantart.com/galler… - I claim no originality in the way I've finished it. I did design the outfit though! Think of it as a study of color and lineart. Again, 10000% props to Claire Hummel.

I decided to try Esmerelda (because Shoomlah did Meg recently and I cannot compete with that!).

Bits and pieces:

White is worn when mourning in Romani fashion, so I changed her shirt to a darker grey-blue.
Romani loved color, so woo color!
Romani also converted their income/wealth into jewellery rather than saving in coins or the like.
Women wore their hair down if they were single, and covered in a dilko (headscarf) if married. Seeing as Esmerelda is with Phoebus at the end of the movie I drew her hair half-covered. (Also, it incorporated her headscarf in a more traditional manner!)
Originally, she had the map the court of miracles wrapped around her hand, but it wasn't enough. I also liked the idea of the cloth more (as Frollo has a fit about it). I was going to include both, but then it just seemed cluttered. D:

I tried hard to make it traditional, but there weren't many outfits that weren't covered entirely in cloaks.

I love this outfit you gave her, and especially the sheer cloth she's holding!Β

This is beautiful, and I am so pleased that you made such an effort to make it accurate and authentic. It's hard because there aren't a lot of records regarding what Romani women wore, but you included the beautiful colours, the long skirt hiding her legs (exposed legs were marime in this era), the exposed neck and shoulders (because that was okay), the cross-chest sash... this is the best illustration I have seen of an authentic Romani woman's outfit. Lovely work.

I had to thank wholly for my research, as well as several Esmeralda appreciation blogs on Tumblr. The flippant attitude towards Romani culture beyond stereotypes bugged me, with stereotypes so prevalent in popular culture rather than fact. I looked into their culture further, and pieced together this outfit with hopes of remedying some of Disney's design problems (especially the white, unless Esmeralda was in mourning). I would love to have found more solid references, but I'm glad to hear you appreciate this piece!

She didn't use the pen tool? Erm. How was she able to get that smooth line to her pieces? ;o

1) working at a laaaarge canvas and then sizing it down. 2) redrawing lines until they look nice 3) rotating the canvas 4) drawing lines and rotating them into better angles!

Esmeralda! The Hunchback of Notre Dame was never my favourite Disney Classic, but I do love Esmeralda (Though not as much as Meg).

I'm loving the outfit. Hope to see even more Disney ladies from you!

Really beautiful rendition of my personal favorite Disney heroine.

You really captured her soft, nurturing side as wall as her smoldering, sexy side.

Really marvelous work!

hehehe it looks like it was a lot of fun to draw/design! and i may be wrong, but did you incorporate the map into her earrings?

I actually drew a stylistic version of the towers of Norte dame. The map on the earrings would have been smarter! Haha

It was half a research piece, and half a study of how to draw in that way. She doesn't use the pen tool for any of her lines, and I really admire that!
