straight to the point? yeah no xD
1. the shading is finished, and now we can start on highlights. unless the pony character in question is some kind of plastic toy or is covered in scales, I normally won't put any highlights on the body except for the hooves and the eyes. the mane and tail are what I focus on. I won't go crazy with the highlights, just little squiggly lines here and there, where the mane/tail faces outwards. once the highlights are done, I lessen the opacity of the layer just a little bit. I also put some on the eyes and more little lines on the hooves.
2. now I can add any missing details, like the cutie mark for example. this is basically my time to finish up the character itself before moving on to the background.
3. my backgrounds are usually very simple. when it comes to a drawing like this one, I usually just do splotches of complementary colors, blue and yellow in this example. I try to keep the whole character on the background, but that isn't a necessity. I can add little details on the background to make it look a little more complete.
and that's the tutorial for my basic pony drawing. hope it was helpful to some of you. I hope to come out with more of these in the future, and I'll probably end up making a separate folder for them.
