Description really quick shitty sketch here because i just had a massive headcanon thingie pop into my head and like an excited highschool girl i had to tell you guys
i was talking with a commenter on one of my older pieces, and I mentioned that Celestia and Sombra have a very bad relationship with each other
well, now I feel like I can finally explain why
~~~
Celestia, Luna, and Discord were the ultimate royals. They were the best of friends, having known each other since childhood, raised to be some of the world's most powerful beings. They were the only known existing alicorns, and were destined to rule the entirety of Equestria.
Each of them was assigned a role. Celestia was the Solar Empress. She was daylight, an autumn harvest, light and beauty, the embodiment of a mother's kindness.
Luna was the Lunar Queen. She was the opposite of her sister, personification of moonlight, wielder of the ocean tides, starlight reflected off of a sheer mountain's face.
Discord was the offspring of the earth. He was nature's voice, her chaos, magic and power and laughter unfolding in an endless catastrophe, wind howling through trees, the unending destruction of an earthquake.
Long ago, when their rule was young, they were fatherless and motherless. They were too young to rule, so Starswirl the Bearded, and old friend of the since-deceased father of the twin sisters, sought to teach them all they needed to know. Luna and Discord were difficult to control. Chaos was in Discord's blood, and his naturally playful disposition was easily spread onto the youngest, Luna. Celestia, however, was calm and peaceful, prepared to learn, and followed every order Starswirl gave her. She was the mother of the group. Starswirl tried his best to control the group, almost to a suffocating degree. While Discord and Luna did their best to cope with the tight reins he kept on them, Celestia suffered under his grip, and she became selfish and self-conscious. Starswirl had convinced her that she was the most important one of the trio, and that her image could not be corrupted by her siblings. So, using her motherly role over them, she suppressed them, even going so far as to hinder the amount of magic they could use. Her self-worth began to crumble under the false weight Starswirl had planted.
It was around this time that Empress Amore was just beginning to settle alongside her people in the newfound Crystal Empire.
Empress Amore was a good friend of Luna's and Celestia's. The two sisters trusted her with their lives, and felt confident in her ruling over their new territory. She accepted. She was naturally kind and empathetic, yet incredibly powerful, and a skilled magic user.
Beginning her rule as an inexperienced empress, she began seeking out a proper student to begin teaching as a successor. A young Sombra caught her eye.
He reminded her of herself. He was small and shy, bullied by his peers, largely alone save for his protective mother and friend, Radiant Hope. Yet he had a natural affinity for love magic; he was absolutely enamored with the Crystal Heart, and could even sway its magic if he so desired, an ability that Amore had only seen in experienced unicorns. Amore had been there when Celestia's legions laid waste to the Umbrum that had once resided where the Crystal Empire now stood. She saw their blood in Sombra, completely clueless and unaware of his heritage, and took pity upon him. She thought it was wrong to steal the Umbrum's land away from them, and thought it was only right that their land should be returned to the care of one of their own once she passed. So she claimed Sombra as her successor, and began his training immediately.
Amore wasn't like Starswirl. She didn't control Sombra or drown his sense of self. She taught him to be as empathetic and kind as herself. She taught him magic and mercy, and he became a prince as powerful and beautiful as herself. Amore was so proud of Sombra that she became convinced he was destined for ascension, and took him to Equestria to get him evaluated.
Sombra was astounded by Equestria. It was so much more colorful and bright than the whites and grays of the Arctic North. He begged the empress to let him stay and be taught under Starswirl, and she reluctantly agreed. Amore didn't trust Starswirl. She saw how irritable and suppressed Celestia was, and ordered that Sombra answer to her, and her alone, in an effort to preserve what she'd taught him.
The royal trio was introduced to Sombra at once, and they loved him. Luna and Discord saw him as a royal just like them, and agreed that he was destined for alicorn-hood.
Celestia, however, felt differently. She was jealous of Sombra. She envied his freedom and kindness. He was already valued by her people, ponies that had never seen him or met him, and she felt that they loved him almost more than they loved her. However, she was not quiet about her hatred towards him. She began to slowly beat him back, to push him away with angry remarks and orders that pushed him. Sombra was never moved by her, but Luna and Discord were disturbed by her hatred, and slowly began to distance themselves from her and her oppression.
Amore, Luna, and Discord were right. Sombra was destined to ascend. Where Celestia, Luna, and Discord were the sun, the moon, and the earth, Sombra was the empath. He represented the beings that lived between them all, the population of the earth. He was emotion, and love, and could control it just so. There was alicorn magic within him, and it was preparing to sprout outwards into wings. All it needed was the final push.
For months, him and Celestia struggled. He was never bitter towards her, always treating her as nothing less than a best friend. Celestia, however, was cold. She hated him with every fiber of her being, but not for any good reason. It was out of jealousy. She saw him as better than herself, and Starswirl had taught her that she had to be the best. However, the rest of Equestria saw him as the prince he was destined to be. So she developed a plan to dethrone him.
His wings were due to appear when Celestia stole his magic away.
She wielded the Elements of Harmony for herself, and severed his wings from his body, sapping his body of its magic and nearly severing his connection to the Crystal Heart. Discord and Luna tried to stop her, but by the time they reached her, the deed was done. Sombra was nearly dead. Celestia had been blinded by rage, and when snapped out of her stupor, was absolutely horrified by what she'd done. However, she couldn't undo it.
Sombra was heartbroken. He was weak and wounded, shamed in front of his family and those who loved him. So he ran away to the Arctic North, and sulked, allowing the Crystal Heart to heal him and replenish his magic. Amore was shocked and terrified for him, and severed any contact she had with Equestria, keeping Celestia away with a shield that she couldn't pass.
Celestia was distraught. Luna and Discord were repulsed by her selfishness, avoiding her until she regrouped. At that moment, Celestia lost her connection to her friends, her family, and her people, and sent the four of them tumbling down a very steep and very dangerous slope.
Sombra was enraged by Celestia's actions. His anger was so deep and intense, and out of spite, he sought to prove to her that he was just as powerful and capable of ruling as she was. He turned Amore to crystal, hid her away, ascended the throne, and became Emperor Sombra, waging war on Equestria with all of his might, with the Crystal Heart at his side.
Celestia, Luna, and Discord were panicking. Equestria had never been at war before, let alone with one of their own sovereign states, and didn't have nearly enough firepower to deal with an entire army of brainwashed soldiers coming at them from their northern border, armed with dark magic. So they brought up their defense, and dealt with it on their own.
Celestia suggested that they deal with Sombra themselves. Luna and Discord agreed. But they refused to help. This was all her fault, and thus she should deal with it alone. So she did. Celestia met Sombra in battle, and was nearly killed before she could use the Elements of Harmony to take him down.
Discord didn't see it as fair. He was angry with Celestia for being so selfish as to destroy one of their own for her own good. He was angry with her for controlling him and Luna. He didn't see her as fit for ruling anymore, and sought to rule in her stead. So he dethroned the twin sisters, and began his tyrannical anarchist rule over Equestria, in Sombra's honor.
Discord's chaos, however, was only a distraction.
He was easily the most powerful among them. He was born of the earth, absorbing most of her magic before she could pass it along to others, dormant for thousands of years and raising hell when he finally awoke. He saw his power, and saw his new kingdom as a way to finally harness that power for himself, having been suppressed for so long. So he tore the world asunder. He invaded the tombs of Celestia's fallen, and raised an army of the dead to use her own soldiers against her. His son, then nameless and fresh-born, would be his knight and general. The ruler of his armies, composed of Chaos and Darkness, strong enough to rip Celestia's wings from her body and kill anybody that tried to keep him from doing so. Discord was insane. If it weren't for Luna, he would've killed Celestia in a heartbeat.
However, Luna managed to convince him otherwise. She still saw hope in her sister, and loved her despite all of her faults. When it came to the final battle, she only stepped in to save her from death.
Discord's banishment was the final straw for her. Luna was jealous of her sister, enraged by her selfishness. She was angry. She lost a brother and a friend, and her sister as well. She tried her best to save herself, but she was eventually transformed into Nightmare Moon. She raised the moon and refused to lower it until Celestia could explain herself and her selfishness. But Celestia couldn't. So they fought for one final time.
And then Celestia was alone.
She was gravely distressed. She'd lost her entire family within a span of a few years, and it was her fault. Her kingdom was in tatters. Her citizens had lost faith in her, and she had to struggle to get it back.
It was around this time that Starswirl was banished to Limbo, and Celestia could finally take a moment to breathe. She grieved the loss of her loved ones. But she could not undo what she'd done. So she regained control, improved her attitude, and resumed her role, broken and alone. She found a replacement for Sombra, Princess Cadence, and taught her everything she needed to know for when the Empire returned. She took charge over Twilight's instruction, and prepared her for alicorn-hood, giving the elements influence over her.
After Twilight and the rest of the mane 6 helped Luna and Discord see reason, they forgave her. They apologized. They regrouped. It wasn't technically her fault. Her actions were the result of Starswirl's poor teaching. She was an experienced ruler now, peaceful and reasonable. For the sake of her fragile sense of worth and to maintain her rule, they were willing to sweep everything under the rug and develop a new story to keep her sane.
When Sombra began his reformation, deeply afflicted by dementia, Discord and Luna were by his side. But Celestia couldn't bear to look at him. He didn't remember her, but she remembered him, and she hated herself for what she'd done to him. She was afraid of him, of being confronted with what she'd done.
She saw him finally at the end of his days. She apologized, hardly paying attention to Sunburst's presence in the room. To this day, he doesn't know why she was so distressed or what she was apologizing for. But he promised her that he wouldn't tell him, and he hasn't.
Even after he recovered, Sombra refuses to forgive her. He refuses to even be in the same room with her. He doesn't forgive and forget like she does, and only tolerates her presence. Celestia doesn't blame him, and respects his space. No one else but Luna and Discord know what's going on, and though they've tried asking into it, they never get more than silence in response.
sorry if i'm completely violating the timeline lol
some notes:
- 'His son, then nameless and fresh-born, would be his knight and general.' this is referring to Interrobang. Discord spent the first few years of his life teaching him to hate Celestia, and to kill her if he found her. however, Interrobang doesn't really remember being taught this. he feels really uneasy around Celestia, and dislikes her (Discord's influence).
- i've changed my headcanons around a little. Sombra didn't kill Empress Amore. he simply imprisoned her. he loved her too much to kill her, and just stowed her away in a place where Celestia wouldn't find her, knowing that she wouldn't allow him to do what he did while she was present. after he regains his wings, he goes back and frees her, and she reinstates herself into modern society, reuniting with the twin sisters.
- Celestia found a replacement for Sombra because she didn't think that he would return from his banishment alive. she knew for a fact that Discord and Luna were immortal, and would hopefully take up their respective mantles once they'd returned. but she thought that because she'd severed his wings from his body that he would die before he managed to escape imprisonment. luckily, he was young, and the Element's magic preserved his body each time he was banished.
- the banishment of Luna, Sombra, and Discord ended up being the worst mistake Celestia ever made. without her sister and friends by her side, she had to take on the responsibilities they had previously handled. alongside the crushing weight she was already carrying, many of Celestia's enemies (namely Chrysalis and her starving hive of Changelings) saw that Equestria was frazzled and weak, and used it to their advantage. Equestria was defenseless without the majority of its royals to save it, and Celestia was completely overburdened, leaving many of her citizens to fend for themselves. this later leads to racism against other creatures under Twilight's rule, especially Changelings, who were constantly swarming Equestria and feeding off of its residual love because of their starvation. dragons, diamond dogs, kirins, griffons, and many other species are also discriminated against because of the attacks they had performed back then. in reality, Equestria was just a selfish, xenophobic country that was abundant in resources. other species and countries invaded Equestria during its time of weakness because they needed these resources and saw that this was the only time they could possibly claim them. however, there was a benefit to this, because certain friendly folk managed to turn each siege into a trade deal, making Equestria incredibly rich in knowledge about their neighbors, and rich in general. because of this, Equestria is now one of the leading countries in exporting...basically and almost literally everything anyone could ever need ever.
hope all that makes sense...
that's all i've got
i'll flesh this out more later
