For art purposes, there's a lot more that's "fair game" than you might think. I usually use images that are obviously in the public domain, but if I find a shot on a personal web page, I explain I'm an artist and ask if I can paint the image. I haven't been turned down yet, and even got a couple of clients out of it! And DA photographers are almost always happy to let you use images as long as you reference them.

Exactly. Or I just ask when I make a comment on how wonderful the photograph is. "Gee, I'd really like to paint that...I'd give you credit, of course." I've yet to have anyone turn me down. My friend has a second account chock full of great horse photographs; I'm sure she'd be honoured.
