Description Finally... the colored version of Final Fantasy 2's villains... is complete. My hand feels like jelly...

As said before, the Lamia Queen is on the bottom-left, Borghen is on right, and on the throne... is Emperor Mateus Palamecia.

Lamia Queen: Most people might not consider the Lamia Queen a primary villain in FF2, but she does get more screentime than people think she does. When the Emperor kidnaps Princess Hilda, he replaces her with an imposter: the Lamia Queen, magically disguised as Hilda. Surprisingly enough, people don't realize she's not Hilda, despite the fact that she didn't cry over the death of the king, or the fact that she was eating rats. Eventually, she tries to seduce Firion, but his friends bust in right when she reveals her true form and they kill her. This is one of the best scenes in the game, cuz Firion is all embarrassed that they overheard him "being seduced".

General Borghen: Am I the only one that thinks he's adorable? (ahem) Anyway... Borghen used to be a General for Princess Hilda's army, but as soon as he saw that the Palamecian Empire was far more powerful, he turned traitor and joined them, ensuring the Emperor's victory by telling him the Fynn Kingdom's military weaknesses. Later, Borghen oversees the construction of the Dreadnought, a giant, flying warship the Emperor uses to destroy every town in the world a second time. He later tries to stop you from obtaining the Goddess's Bell from the Snow Cave, and he fights you. But he's extremely weak; he does single digit damage and dies in two turns. Before dying, however, he activates an "Acme Indiana Jones Giant Boulder" which rolls after you. Josef uses his immense strength to hold the boulder off while the heroes escape, but the boulder crushes and kills him. But that's not the end of Borghen, no sir! He comes back as a zombie several times throughout the remainder of the game, AND throughout FF2's sequel, Soul of Rebirth, making him the only FF2 villain to never completely die.

Emperor Mateus Palamecia: [OMG RANT TIME] Mateus is like... the best FF villain ever. I know you're gonna say "No, Sephiroth's the best!". No, Sephiroth's just the most popular. And Kefka's not the best either; most of the stuff he does is based on luck and insanity. MATEUS, however, did everything that both Kefka AND Sephiroth did first, and then some.
Anyway, Mateus is the Emperor of Palamecia, a desert kingdom north of Fynn. Mateus was very smug and cocky about his impenetrable fortress, enough to the point where he offered his own daughter as a prize to the first person that could break in. All who tried failed, but... PAUL, of all people, used a kite to fly to the roof and then took off with the Emperor's daughter!! What became of the Palamecian princess afterward is unknown, but Mateus is so enraged by this, he decides to take over the world to put thieves and rogues like Paul in their place.
He starts by making a pact with Satan. This pact gives Mateus enormous magical powers, up to and including the ability to raise an undead army. This pact comes with a price though (of course). If Mateus dies (of old age or suicide ONLY), then Mateus's soul would be cast straight to Hell. But Mateus is smart.... He deduces that if he lets someone kill him, he'd be half-murdered half-suicidal, and thus splitting his soul in half. (Mateus is a genius)
He uses his undead army to burn down every town in the world, except for Deist, which he wipes out by poisoning their drinking water. He occupies Fynn (eliminating the only other opposing army) and Bafsk (where he begins construction of the Dreadnought). He then uses the Dreadnought (a giant, flying warship) to destroy every town in the world a second time. He also kidnaps Hilda and Cid, replaces Hilda with the Lamia Queen, and imprisons them on the Dreadnought. The heroes later rescue Cid and the Lamia Queen, leading her directly to their hideout. (Mateus is a genius)
After the Lamia Queen is killed, Mateus makes an announcement that the Princess is to be held as a prize in a tournament he's holding. (He likes putting princesses up as prizes, don't he?) Firion and his friends are the only participants, and they win. Duh. They present themselves before the Emperor, and he reveals it to be the trap it really was, and he has them imprisoned.
With Firion and the Princess locked up, Mateus begins the construction of the Cyclone Palace, which upon completion, he used to destroy every town in the world a third time. (overkill, much?) Firion and his friends break into the Cyclone Palace, and confront the Emperor. Unbeknownst to them, the Emperor WANTS them to kill him, and he fights them using only spells that increase his defense (like Haste, Protect, Shell, Blink, etc.). The Emperor is finally defeated, and as per his plan, his soul is split in half. One goes to Heaven, the other goes to Hell. Once there, he kills their original rulers and usurps their thrones, becoming the dominant ruler of the afterlife. (Did I mention that Mateus is a genius?)
His Hell Emperor half returns to Earth as its ruler, but this opens a passage that allows Firion and friends to travel to Hell, where they fight and defeat the Dark Emperor once and for all. It is revealed in the sequel that Scott, Josef, Minwu, and Ricard (all characters that died throughout the game) traversed through Heaven in order to confront and defeat the Light Emperor. And thus ended the Emperor's tyranny. (But he's still a genius!)

Some of you (carbonatedwater in particular) may be looking forward to the FF3 pics of the FF Wall. I'm sorry to say, but they will have to wait. I want to see what designs they'll use in Dissidia for Luneth and the Cloud of Darkness before I decide which design to use. If anything, I'll probably just do the Final Boss pic.

While I am inspired by the offerings and agreements of a fellow Mateus fan, I must decline the offer to join your club. Nothing against your club, mind you. I do have other pics of Mateus if you're interested.

Umm, actually I don't think Palamenca wanted to die to get the powers of Hell.

Nor do I think he took over the world for that reason (well okay maybe it was, but I'm pretty sure that was only part of it.)

If he DIDN'T want to die, then why did he only use status magic on himself during the entire fight?

And if to cleanse the world isn't a logical, sensible reason for a rational thinking genius like Mateus to take over, then what is?

Same reason the bloodsword works on an undead lord of hell to end the fight faster, the fact that he didn't use the Lamia Queen's cos-play act to have the returners fall straight into a trap to put an end to them once and for all, and the fact that he could have just used the jade passage to get to hell and conquer it the whole time: Poor Thinking Skills

---

How about the fact that his kingdom was friggin' desert with no population whatsoever? That could easily convince anyone to conquer the world. (Though it does beg the question on how there is only two kingdoms in the story)

Did you just say Returners?!

I think we're getting Mateus and Kefka a little mixed up.

It's a typo, Rebels and Returners both are spelled with an "R," and very well missed the point as well.

Please get back to it.

Mateus doesn't have poor thinking skills. If there's a glaring flaw in his plan, then it's only evident of the fact that no plan is perfect. He can create plans that are very, very difficult to detain, but a true master always has back-up plans.

And technically, Hell Emperor should never have been able to die. He was already dead; where would his soul go? The defeat of the final boss is a Deus Ex Machina created solely to give the game a happy ending.

PicketPolecat In reply to Dachimotsu [2009-10-22 19:02:58 +0000 UTC]

Or he never proofreads his plans, I guess that's the better answer for that scenario.

---

That's the point I've been trying to make with the blood sword being able to kill him.

Also, the soul could have easily been destroyed (or transported to the Dissidia world) as a good explanation on where it would go.

Dachimotsu In reply to PicketPolecat [2009-10-22 21:21:08 +0000 UTC]

How can you proofread something that's impossible to expect? He became the immortal, undead, ruler of the afterlife. By calculations, the chances of dying are 0%. There's no way he could've planned for a story-driven deus ex machina.

He dethroned the goddamn devil, he could easily be beaten the same way if he doesn't make sure no one else does.

Hmm... You've a point. Maybe his leftover mortality was thrown in their by Satan himself as insurance?

Satan isn't exactly an honorable dealer. And I can see Mateus's pride giving him this foresight.

PicketPolecat In reply to Dachimotsu [2009-10-23 02:02:24 +0000 UTC]

That still doesn't explain why he's weak to drain spells, because given your logic, he'd still be classified as undead (Okay, I officially bring this factor up way too much).

Well, the story gives me way too much of a headache trying to figure out, so maybe it's just me.

I always thought that Exdeath was the most underappreciated villain, but it is sooo easy to forget about the first three games. Mateus is even able to break the strongest of the first fiends(Tiamat) to his will.[don't hate me for connecting two games, this is normaly a hardass challenge.]

PicketPolecat In reply to vopop30 [2009-10-21 20:54:32 +0000 UTC]

Not if you use a death spell, Tiamat apparently weak against that (and poison).

Actually, Exdeath IS the most underappreciated villain. Mateus actually has a Japanese fan-site called "Ubooar!", but Exdeath has no such thing.

Lamia Queen: She killed me twice before the third time I got lucky.

Borghen: Two turns like Seph said, that's all it took.

Emperor Mateus: UBOAR!!!!! Why didn't they keep that in the PSP version? I mean the man took over Heaven and Hell, let him keep his death cry!

millilicious In reply to Agularal [2009-09-04 20:13:58 +0000 UTC]

Out of nowhere, wtf
Actually, they did keep it in the Japanese version. Tidus even asks him what his death cry is all about. I dunno about the English version, though

I didn't get very far on FF2 (GBA version) so I didn't know much about Palamecia, but after reading this, I'm absolutely flabergasted they managed to put in such a complicated (and genius) villain in a mere NES game! That's really one hell of a plan! (pun not intended)

Zeromatrious In reply to OkashiiNaito [2009-03-04 03:10:54 +0000 UTC]

Actually, only his main plan involving WORLD DOMINATION!!! was in the original games. I'm guessing the rest (plus his true name, "Mateus") was in the novel released about the game.

I haven't played FFII yet, but from what you wrote, and other various sources, I believe that Mateus may well be the best villian.
However, for many years I have seen Sephiroth as such and it's kind of imprinted in my mind now.
But I realize now who the smartest villian is. Thanks for that.

And of, course the picture is really cool.
