Awesome work! I hope Hyperphase was as impressed as I am! Great details, and I love the sense of scale... you know it's big just looking at it

This thing has got to be more than a ship or station. This is a planet buster, isn't it? Either way, this is EPIC!

Just a really big fleet flagship, i'm afraid to say...
Of course, it's got lots of guns and one very big gun.

That's a beautiful design.

This will date me sadly, but the phrase "torch ship" brings baxck memories of fourth or fifth grade and playing "spaceship" on those metal playground pyramidal climbing bar things; STAR TREK (TOS, as they say now) had just come out on TV (yes younguns, there was this thing called "network TV") - and every kid wanted to say things like "impulse engines " and "phasers" but I stubbornly insisted that our playground craft was a torch ship because I had been reading the Heinlein juveniles, especially STARMAN JONES and BETWEEN PLANETS, and they had those wonderful Clifford Geary illustrations of giant spaceports and those Heinlein top-shaped torch ships. (Which on some level I still regard as the perfect SF novels; some years later I came across the horrible I WILL FEAR NO EVIL and the dreadful STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND and hated them deeply; they seemed to me - and still do - like a kind of betrayal on Heinlein's part)

looks like it could be a mace or an futuristic torch/flashlight device...

other then that it looks nice, i would suggest trying to play with the name's lettering, it kinda looks off, as in, looks to flat, instead of slightly angled like you would expect it as it follows the hull. getting such a thing right is tricky though.

Daemoria In reply to Avarus-Lux [2017-07-16 15:54:45 +0000 UTC]

A friend of the client made the same comment as to it looking like a torch. I actually was trying to make a giant lighthouse of doom. I totally watched too much Bloodborne videos of the Shoggoth tower. :]

I wasn't too concerned with the actual angle of the lettering, due to this concept focusing on clarity of form. I'll be messing around with spline-based fonts in the 3d mesh, and those will conform to the hull. I did have some angled fonts, but it looked more rubbish than anything else, so I cleared it out for sake of time/clarity.

Is it a vertical ship? if so that's fantastic. I quite like the torch or light house idea, something along the line of a "Becon of hope!" or some cheesy patriotic thing like that

Alignment of vehicles in space is almost irrelevant, though. No up/down, and all that.

Dimcreaper In reply to Daemoria [2017-07-17 01:53:00 +0000 UTC]

I would have to disagree with you on there. There are some logistical things to consider when designing the "combat facing" or engagement angle of a ship. The average ship you see is a horizontal design, should it engage in combat nose first, a hull penetrating shot could gut the whole thing bow to stern. A horizontal ship however might only loose a deck or elevator. Just some theoretics I've been playing with.

Negative. Ship is not vertical. You're seeing a top-down view.Β

As far as the font goes, if that's Gill Sans you might want to retain that kind of typeface in a future version, somehow; Gill Sans gives a certain regal extra dignity to a ship title like "Sovereign of Space". Maybe. Just a thought.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Daemoria In reply to jssabotta [2017-07-17 00:23:56 +0000 UTC]

I plan on re-using the font for the final illustration. It's actually based on the lettering used by the Royal Canadian Airforce.

Appropriate that you approve of a font with 'Gill' in it...

Hyperphase In reply to Vumpalouska [2017-07-16 08:44:21 +0000 UTC]

It is, indeed, a artificial star. Superdreadnoughts require immense amounts of power and thrust, and with the technology to construct superdreadnoughts came the technology to create artificial stars.

Vumpalouska In reply to Hyperphase [2017-07-16 13:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Huh. I'd hate have one of these things lose containment in low orbit around my home planet.

Hyperphase In reply to Vumpalouska [2017-07-16 13:05:15 +0000 UTC]

It would certainly be very pretty and probably create a sizable EMP on the planet below, but the star isn't *that* large all things considered.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vumpalouska In reply to Hyperphase [2017-07-16 13:19:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh. I feared it might end up creating a small scale supernova with enough power to wipe out the atmosphere of an entire world.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Hyperphase In reply to Vumpalouska [2017-07-16 13:26:53 +0000 UTC]

That's...not how supernovas work!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Vumpalouska In reply to Hyperphase [2017-07-16 13:41:29 +0000 UTC]

Essentially they do; the core of the star collapses in on itself until the collapse is stopped by neutron interactions mediated by the strong nuclear force, and a rebound effect occurs, creating the characteristic explosion. I have no idea how a miniature star contained by some super advanced future technology would behave in real life, but I'm pretty sure it would be inherently unstable and require constant stabilization.

And if said miniature star can move a sixty-kilometer ship around and power its systems, it must contain a lot of energy. Having that energy released all at once in case of a containment failure (such as in case of the ship's destruction in battle or for some other reason) would probably have nasty effects on things around it on a very large radius.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Avarus-Lux In reply to Vumpalouska [2017-07-16 15:55:04 +0000 UTC]

it would be a nova "planetary nebula kind" at best then though, not a supernova, not even by a long shot...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Daemoria In reply to Vumpalouska [2017-07-16 14:23:04 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to say this ship belongs to a softer-scifi setting than you're typically used to dealing with, in mine or your own works.

The Rule of Cool is in fullest effect, right down to the giant glowing shoot-me core of the ship.

It certainly would be interesting to see one of these ships blow up, though. We'll see where Hyperphase takes this, in future images and stories.

Vumpalouska In reply to Daemoria [2017-07-16 14:25:21 +0000 UTC]

Fair enough

But yeah, the bigger and cooler a spaceship is, the bigger and cooler is it's eventual and inevitable destruction in battle.
