Description I've not been uploading for a few weeks, but it's because I've been working on a couple of longer term, big projects. Including this one. This one is one of the most monstrously time consuming things I've made in quite some time, but the concept has been burning a hole in my pocket for most of the past years. I just had to sit down and actually make it. What I've produced is something I feel quite proud of, and I think is a good benchmark for where I'm wanting to push myself and my general skill level. May I present the first in what I intend to be a series of guides relating to map design.

So, what this is not is a tutorial for how to make maps on Inkscape, or GIMP, or Photoshop, or any other piece of software. Those are something the mapmaking community has no shortage of. This guide series is better summarised as being about the theory of map design as a whole, and in this specific case how to use colour in digital maps. Much of what I've learned about colour in maps has been through years of experience, and a lot of that experience has been acquired through a certain amount of brute forcing. I've never really encountered any attempt to provide a tutorial or guide for these concepts, and I've seen a lot of newcomers to mapmaking who find this a really difficult area to get started with. It *is* a really difficult area. I felt like this is a neglected subject in terms of accessible resources, and thus was born the idea for this guide.

I sincerely hope that someone out there benefits from reading this colouring guide, whether you're a complete newcomer to mapmaking or someone who has been grinding away for a while. In any case, thank you to anyone who spends their time reading it.

This version of the Guide is specifically arranged to be viewable as a single image on DA, a multipage PDF version is available on my Patreon here for those would prefer that www.patreon.com/posts/finished… .
