Description
--Full view pleaseee--You know when you plan on doing a certain picture but instead you end up drawing a different and completely unrelated picture? Yeah.. xD
And those things are ripped up red ribbons, not pools of blood. Just to clarify. xD They relate to another character of mine.

It's cute, but I do have a few suggestions.
Hedgehogs have shorter legs than that, and longer snouts-- its face looks too dog-like to be a hedgehog. And while quills are a pain do draw... well, I would kind of expect a hedgehog to have them, as opposed to spiky-looking fur. And I think maybe just one or two ribbons would do just fine, all of these seem like overkill.

Thanks.
Yes, I'll be the first to say that I tweaked the anatomy to look better for the picture.
With the quills, like I said in the other critique, I made them more spiky initially, but they looked very stiff and made the picture look lifeless. I made them more flowy and fur-like to keep some movement in the picture.
The ribbons tie in to another character's story of mine, so that's why there are so many.

I love the colours in this, especially the shadow against the snow ^^
And yes! They need more love (and i'm not talking about sonic, who i didn't know was a hedgehog until someone told me)
But i'd have to agree with phatcadaver on the hedgehog point (although not as rudely). I've seen a lot of hedgehogs (we get then in our garden almost every night, and we once had to take an injured one to a vets) and i've only got three things to critique about:
1) How they're holding themselves up. Hedgehogs tend to almost shuffle along fairly low down rather than stand tall like a dog or cat would for example,
2) You've made it look like fur on its back, although it could be stylised (sorry if it is!) i just thought i'd point out that the spikes on their back really are spikes, you can't pick them up really without a towel or thick gloves on your hands, although it can look a bit like fur from a distance,
3) There isn't really such an obvious gap between the head and the rest of it's body,
This picture is good to show these points: [link]
Hope you find this helpful! ^^

Thank you very much! c: I had a lot of fun playing with the colors on this one. <3
Yeah, I didn't spend too much time studying the anatomy before drawing this. x3 It was more of a concept/ play with colors thing. I saw some pictures like this [link] and thought the longer legs and neck were cute, so I went with it. xD
With the spikes, I originally had them drawn in as spikes, but when I stylized and simplified them down they looked very static. It made the whole picture look kind of lifeless and stiff.
This is definitely one of those instances when I went more with what looked good over what was correct. x3
Thank you very much though! I will keep that in mind when I draw another hedgehog. ^^

Hedgehogs have little bristle-like spines, not fluffy fur. Maybe try drawing from reference next time? It helps me learn how to properly draw animals too! Lots of artists do it and there's no shame in it.

"Mindless flattery"?
I beg to differ.
We are genuinely honest about the fact that Daesiy's drawings are beautiful. You may be speaking your mind about this, but so are we. All these kind comments are as honest as they can be. Please correct me if I am wrong.
And in reply to your first comment, the main point of this picture was to illustrate and experiment with the colors. If you want to critique on anatomy and realism, go find an artwork that was meant to be drawn in a realistic way. Thank you.

So honest or not, I can't say what I think because what I have to say is negative? Or did you mean to say that if the artist was too lazy to pay attention to an aspect of the picture I'm a dick to draw attention to it?

RubySmiley In reply to PhatCadaver [2011-12-24 11:00:58 +0000 UTC]
What I was meaning to point out in my reply was that everyone's comments are perfectly honest when they say that they like this picture. But your original comment strikes me as being rather rude. Constructive criticism is a nicer way to put it. Instead of saying "Apparently you have never seen neither a hedgehog nor real snow," it would be less rude if it were put as something along the lines of, "One of the things you could work on in this picture is the anatomy of the hedgehog and the snow."
You can say what you want to say, but it would be greatly appreciated if you put your words in a more nicer approach.
Also, I wouldn't say that Daesiy is lazy. Hey that rhymes We all gradually improve on anatomy. You can't get it absolutely spot-on perfect in one go. (I don't believe there are other pictures of hedgehogs in her gallery.) Again, the main thing she wanted to draw out is the colors of the picture.

I admit I could have been more mature, but I hardly thought she was going to even read any of the comments, seeing how many there are and how thoughtless most of them are. Besides, she strikes me as the kind of person who won't take advice from someone like me, and didn't feel like wasting the skin on my fingertips. I think you, Daesiy herself and that one nincompoop who tried to tongue-lash me are all holding negative feedback to higher standards than positive feedback, which I find a little hypocritical. What, I can say whatever I want as long as it's positive, but the second I don't like something I have to explain myself, justify my opinion? Tch.

I don't want to push this any further to make her feel uncomfortable, but she does read her comments. You, I must admit, have a point. However, if you want her to take your advice, putting it in a polite manner would do better. I'm sure you wouldn't like to get comments like that on your own artwork. Again, I think it was because of how your comments were worded.

All that is unlike a real hedgehog is the colors, and that's just fine since this is obviously a character...

The hedgehog in the picture: [link]
As much as I like the picture, it's got a nice and warm tone to it with the colors, I do agree with the fact, that it looks more like a canine with massive fur on it's back, rather than a hedgehog.
But the main point is, that you recognize it as a hedgehog, no matter how it looks.

"If you were smart"? Really? Ok... You're clearly growing desperate now, this isn't fun anymore. That, and it saddens me that you think a picture is the same as the real thing. Do you tell people you've met the celebrities you've seen photos of? I bet you think it feels just like you'd known them for years...
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Toyoue In reply to PhatCadaver [2011-12-22 17:11:18 +0000 UTC]
Lmfao. Growing desperate? You DO know that photos make the perfect reference for studying anatomy, don't you? You can't study something that's moving around all of the time. Also, photos look exactly the same as the real thing. And for the record once again, I do not think I've met a celebrity because I've seen photos. That is not the same thing as studying anatomy from a photo AT ALL. The fact that you think it is the same thing just makes you look even more stupid.
Anyways, I'm done with you. I'm sorry I came at you, but you were rude. You could've at least offered some constructive criticism along with your rude remark. And that's my final reply. See you.

If photos make perfect reference for studying anatomy, then maybe you should actually look at some. Clearly, hedgehogs do not have fur like that. And make a better argument, seriously. How old are you? Five?

The hedgehog maybe not, but he's got red stripes; it's obviously not a hedgehog that would exist in real life.
And it's really cute.
