would I be able to do this in Gimp or FireAlpaca? (FireAlpaca is a great free program, i'm sure my mom wont buy me photoshop)

I'm not sure about firealpaca, but it should work in GIMP (minus the masking part -- just select outside the lineart and delete the excess shading when you're done)

I have Gimp, not photoshop, but I was wondering how you would do something similar to this. I can understand the drawing and clipping out where you've selected with the lasso tool, but I don't know how to make it so you can't go outside the line. When I tried duplicating a layer it simply duplicated the layer without asking me if I wanted to do anything with masking. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me to help me make this work. I absolutely love how cell shading looks and I honestly think it would be a lot easier for me to work with.

Hi! Sorry for such a late reply! I don't think GIMP has masking capabilities, but you should be able to select outside the lineart, expand the selection, and delete the excess shading from the shading layer. Or you could fill the character with the shading color, erase the excess, lock the layer, and cut out the highlights by painting them with white.

That's totally fine! hahah! I'll take a closer look at it and try and do that! Thank you very much for the suggestion. Hopefully I'll be getting photoshop sooner or later. I've started saving up hahah.

I think she stays on the same layer she started shading it and uses the eraser tool or whatever. I don't have a mac : P

How do you make the color from the brush not go outside the lines?

neokasey82 In reply to The-Darkness-of-Fell [2014-03-19 21:56:24 +0000 UTC]

When she made the layer, she put it above her coloring layer, and then hit "Use previous layer as clipping mask."

Sorry, one more question ^^' You take the lasso tool and outline the area you want shaded. What do you do next to get the original fur back? Like, to make the rest darker besides the area you highlighted/shaded?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daesiy In reply to IntusAsper [2011-12-30 01:51:11 +0000 UTC]

You erase out the shading or hit delete

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IntusAsper In reply to Daesiy [2011-12-30 02:17:07 +0000 UTC]

Ok. And that will create the effect that happened when you did so?
