I understand that this probably isn't the meaning behind the piece, but my first impression was that ofbbeofbbeedking the norms, not filling in bubbles on a test and breaking free of that.
It's like an argument to America's education system. As an artist, I sometimes feel like I'm forced to fit certain criteria to do well in school and my creativity isn't always welcome. That's why this piece resonated with me.

I'm not going to argue that this is a very well done piece, and you did mix the mediums very well, but I don't understand the picture at all. What does this have to do with addictions, and why will it touch all artists?

hmm my interpretation is that, lets face it, some artists become broke doing what they love the most because it isnt enough money that they can make to go around. Perhaps this is what happened to this "person" yet he cannot stop doing what he loves, he gets paper and pen and continues to do this "Addiction" I think everyone does it as well, on homework, random scraps of paper, dull pencils, taking notes. Oh and note that it is a lottery ticket that this person is beginning to draw on, got no money. But still takes his chances, perhaps someone will see this persons "works" on these "useless" papers and give him a job, who knows?
I hope this answers your question!

Hmm interesting. My interpretation was a bit darker. I was thinking of the addiction as being a drug addiction or something. And this has made the artist loose everything, he's living on the streets and he starts to draw on a scrap of paper, but his hand is no longer steady because of the drugs and the pen splatters ink.
But either way it's an excellent piece and evokes strong emotion.
